Did anyone else get phony email from John Edwards recently?
What the heck is John Edwards doing? He falsely used a screen name to send me the following letter. In other words, the return email address was not his own. How do I know this? Because it was one of MY screen names. In other words, one of my screen names supposedly sent this message to another one. I know I didn't authorize this. I haven't received or responded to anything from John Edwards.

Has anyone else gotten this thing?

"Dear Friend,

I thought you would be interested in this message from John Edwards.

--

With the anniversary of Katrina approaching, I'm reminded of the pictures of thousands of vulnerable people stranded in the New Orleans Superdome. If it feels to me like it just happened yesterday, imagine what it feels like to the people who actually lived through the hurricane's devastation.

It's a pretty safe bet that George Bush and his Republican allies in Congress don't spend much time thinking about it. They are too busy grandstanding about flag burning and passing even more tax cuts for the most fortunate Americans. The concerns of people displaced because of Katrina and people trying to rebuild their lives in New Orleans have apparently been forgotten.

In many parts of New Orleans, it's as though the hurricane did hit just yesterday. Half the former residents have not made it home and vast stretches of the city are still deserted and full of debris. The National Guard had to be redeployed to make sure the streets remain safe. More than three-quarters of the schools remain closed. Nursing homes are scarce.

Enough is enough. Before August 29, 2006 - Katrina's anniversary - Congress must act to restore New Orleans and give Katrina survivors a real shot at rebuilding their homes and lives.

1. Boy... hard to say...
Seems like every day I get an e-mail from Clark, Kerry, Reed, Edwards, MoveOn, and just about every Democratic group under the sun.

I delete them after I read them, otherwise the box gets too full..

If no one here remembers the e-mail right off, maybe you can ask about it on the Edwards blog:

5. Thanks, I'll ask them.
I don't think anyone's campaign should collect email addresses to use them like this. Do you?

3. Did you sign to receive the DSCC messages?
I noticed that, since I signed the DCCC mesaages, I received unsollicited messages from some Dems I never asked for.

4. I got that letter, and it seems real to me.
Edited on Tue Aug-08-06 06:13 AM by Eric J in MN
Mine had a return address of:
Sen. John Edwards, DSCC <info@dscc.org>

My letter started:

"Dear Eric,

TAKE ACTION

Tell congressional Republicans to get serious about fixing the Gulf now.

Click here to sign the petition.

With the anniversary of Katrina approaching, I'm reminded of the pictures of thousands of vulnerable people stranded in the New Orleans Superdome. If it feels to me like it just happened yesterday, imagine what it feels like to the people who actually lived through the hurricane's devastation."

Mine didn't start with:

"Dear Friend,

I thought you would be interested in this message from John Edwards."

6. Looks like the "Tell a Friend" feature
from an original "Take Action" email was used.

8. I think "a friend" sent it to you ?
I know whenever I sign one of those petitions, whether it's sent from a candidate, moveon, or any other PAC, I usually get a screen prompt to "tell a friend" with several spaces to enter "friends" email addresses.

I never use it because I know that just feeds more email addresses into the DNC and other liberal groups who use the online activist programs. I usually just copy and paste the message with a link to "my friends" :)

It's a legit Edwards letter, and a great action, somebody sent it to you by supplying either the Edwards campaign or the DSCC your email address.

9. But what doesn't seem legit to me is that the return address wasn't the
Edwards campaign -- it was my own screen name. (It was addressed TO another of my screen names.) So, without my permission, they were sending this "dear friend" letter to some other email address, which happened to be my own. How do I know they didn't use it to send to other people, too?
