Ohio's Ney, Linked to Abramoff, Drops Out of Race (Update2)

Aug. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Representative Bob Ney said he is dropping out of his race for re-election, becoming the second lawmaker tied to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff to end his career in Congress.

The decision ``came down to my family,'' the Ohio Republican said in a statement. ``I must think of them first, and I can no longer put them through this ordeal.'' He said he plans to finish his current term.

Ney, 52, was referred to in a series of guilty pleas made over the past nine months by Abramoff and his associates. Abramoff in January pleaded guilty to conspiring to corrupt lawmakers and federal officials. Another member of Congress tied to the Abramoff scandal, former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, a Texas Republican, resigned from Congress in June.

Ney's withdrawal might help Republicans hold on to his rural Ohio district, which Ney has served since 1995. State Senator Joy Padgett said she will seek the party's nomination for the seat. James Harris, a Zanesville financial analyst who lost to Ney in the Republican primary in May, said he may try again for the nomination. :::snip:::

1. Ah, the old family excuse...
"Gotta spend more time with the family."

"Came down to my family."

"Must respect the wishes of my family."

Christ. Does anyone believe this shit anymore?

2. Hold it, did Ney win Ohio's primary in May?
Which means he should be on the general election ballot for November on the Republican slot. Isn't this another Tom DeLay Gambit? Is Ohio election law significantly different from Texas law? Can Ohio Democrats sue to keep Mr. Ney on the ballot?

two thirds of Abramoff's humorously-named trio -- Nay, Doolittle, and Delay -- are out.
