It's not that many votes, but the way it's falling sort of proves the point of the article. People are swayed by false or incomplete reports in the media... and their biases keep them blinkered to the truth even when presented with it.

Keep in mind that the wording of the poll can be misleading. The question doesn't make the distinction about WHEN Saddam had WMD. We know that prior to the first gulf war, he did -- therefore, a Yes answer would technically be correct.

Half of Americans now say Iraq had weapons of mass destruction when the United States invaded the country in 2003 -- up from 36 percent last year, a Harris poll finds. Pollsters deemed the increase both "substantial" and "surprising" in light of persistent press reports to the contrary in recent years.

The survey did not speculate on what caused the shift in opinion, which supports President Bush's original rationale for going to war. Respondents were questioned in early July after the release of a Defense Department intelligence report that revealed coalition forces recovered 500 aging chemical weapons containing mustard or sarin gas nerve agents in Iraq.

A striking finding in the new PIPA/Knowledge Networks poll is that many Americans are unaware that weapons of mass destruction have not been found in Iraq. While 59% of those polled correctly said the US has not found Iraqi weapons of mass destruction, 41% said they believed that the US has found such weapons (34%) or were unsure (7%).

Steven Kull, director of PIPA, comments: "For some Americans, their desire to support the war may be leading them to screen out information that weapons of mass destruction have not been found. Given the intensive news coverage and high levels of public attention to the topic, this level of misinformation suggests that some Americans may be avoiding having an experience of cognitive dissonance."

"To some extent this misperception can be attributed to repeated headlines that there has been a promising lead in the effort to find evidence of such weapons' headlines that are not counterbalanced by prominent reporting that these leads have not been fruitful. But there is also reason to believe that this misperception may be unconsciously motivated, as the mistaken belief is substantially greater among those who favored the war."

This recent *poll* is unadulterated propaganda. These guys are throwing everything against the wall now, because their treacherous days are numbered.

They mention that half of America believes it, which pushes the poll one way, but they also use the word "still," which I LOVE.

How could someone read "still believe" in the question yet still vote yes? It's willful ignorance. They give you the answer!

If you support the war and you believed there were no WMD's you would have to question yourself. Even if you think there weren't WMD's you would answer that there were so that you did not have to question your support of the war.
