Professional Employees Win Support for Employee Free Choice Act

Pamela Wilson, assistant to the president for the AFL-CIO Department for Professional Employees (DPE), sends us the following report on DPE’s success in moving support for passage of the Employee Free Choice Act (S. 842 and H.R. 1696). The act would strengthen protections for workers’ freedom to choose by requiring employers to recognize a union after a majority of workers sign cards authorizing union representation. It also would provide for mediation and arbitration of first-contract disputes and authorize stronger penalties for violation of the law when workers seek to form a union.

A companion organization to the American Library Association (ALA) has adopted a resolution supporting passage of the Employee Free Choice Act, legislation to give workers greater freedom to form unions.

The governing council of the ALA-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) approved the resolution June 26 at the annual conference of the ALA in New Orleans.

The ALA-APA’s Committee on the Salary and Status of Library Workers worked with the AFL-CIO’s Department for Professional Employees in developing the resolution. The ALA-APA works to promote the professional interests of librarians and other library workers.
