House to Put Federal Agencies, Programs on the Chopping Block

For years, Republicans have squawked that the federal government is too big while simultaneously feeding a gazillion dollar deficit.
So check out their latest ploy: The GOP-dominated House is pushing two bills, the so-called Government Efficiency Act (H.R. 5766) and the Abolishment of Obsolete Agencies and Federal Sunset Act (H.R. 3282) that would allow unelected Bush administration cronies to recommend changes in the federal government —including eliminating entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare— and fast-track their decisions through Congress.
That’s right. In order to scrap allegedly superfluous government programs the Republicans want to create a superfluous commission to oversee their demise.
Opposition from Democrats, labor unions and veterans organizations has helped postpone a floor vote until September. This is no guarantee, however, that Republicans will not renew their push after the August Congressional break and we should accordingly remain on the alert.

More red tape. Less stability since this commission's job will be to arbitrarily defund things.
