Oh Damn. The Day (New London, CT) endorsed Lieberman.
http://www.theday.com/re.aspx?re=ce04d4f8-5d43-46cf-b3fe-80e9f00b1606

"The characterization of Sen. Lieberman as a Bush ally is exaggerated. He has opposed the administration's Neanderthal-like environmental policies, its excessive tax cuts and the record deficits they have produced. Sen. Lieberman also vigorously opposed other Bush follies such as domestic spying, rendition and torture."

:wtf: Are they talking about the same Senator Lieberman who voted for the 2005 energy bill, who contributed to record deficits with his war-mongering, and who defended Gonzales's use of the word "quaint" to describe the Geneva Conventions? And just when did torture become a "folly"?

I didn't expect this, because the Day has been so outspoken against Bush. They did at least say that their editorial board was split on who to endorse, and that Lamont was more than a one-issue candidate.

1. I can't imagine
Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 06:13 AM by fujiyama
newspaper endorsements having an impact on this race, so late in the game.

I expect this to be a race, where most of the voters will have their mind made up by now. Having seen the number of mistakes Lieberman has made in alienating his core constituency, there is little he can do to win back support, short of supporting an impeachment resolution of Bush.

Ultimately though, this will be a race that will be determined on whether or not Dems are willing to keep Lieberman. This is a referendum on him, and was never really about Lamont, who from what I've read about, will likely make a decent senator. In some ways, he reminds me of Mark Warner, considering his own business sucess, but will likely have a much more liberal record (though of course Warner was a governor).

2. I hope you're right.
According to the latest polls, only 4% of primary voters are still undecided.

However, I'm remembering when the Day endorsed Congressman Rob Simmons (R). According to the polls, Simmons and the Democratic challenger, Courtney, were running neck and neck. Then Simmons won in a landslide.

BTW, Simmons and Courtney are facing off again this November.

3. Well, don't look now but
so did the Norwich Bulletin.

It's clear that the establishment is bound and determined to keep Lieberman in office.

4. Double damn.
:scared: These editorials are so late that there's no time to rebut them.

When I was campaign manager for municipal candidates, the accepted wisdom was that newspaper endorsements would sway about 10% of the voters. That would put Joe back in the running.

5. For people not firmly decided, yes
I believe that. Pretty sneaky. Oh, I didn't read it but the NH Register also endorsed him. Like I said, the establishment really wants to keep him.

7. As much as I am fan of the Senator's, I promise... if he wins the primary
I will support his nomination and race.

Wonder if the Lamont detractor's around here will be willing to make the same promise?

8. I'll be honest...
I cannot and will not EVER support Joe Lieberman... not even for dog-catcher. He is a disgrace.

I will, however, respect the decision of the CT voters. It is ultimately their deciion and their vote.

9. Sounds fair to me...
but will those who have been actively marginalizing Lamont, and those who support Lamont, be willing to do the same?

10. Support Lieberman how?
Will I send money to Lieberman if he wins on Tuesday? No.

Will I send money to his Republican opponent? No.

11. Will follow the race, be in favor of a Lieberman win,
if the race gets really close (as in jeopardy to go GOP - at a time when we have the chance to takeover majority in the senate) - then I would even send money. I will also not participate in any activity that would do anything to harm his election (even as minor as participate in disparaging threads that can be used to cherry pick words out of context to be used by opponents.)

That isn't much - but I think it is likely more than some of the anti-Lamont folks would be willing to commit to.

12. Although your question is interesting, it's (fortunately) moot.
There is nearly a 0% chance that this Senate seat will go to the Republican nominee, who does not have his party's full support and is in the midst of a gambling scandal. If Lamont wins the primary, the race will be between Lamont as a Dem and Lieberman as an Independent. If Lieberman wins the primary, he has his Senate seat locked up.

13. Right. Which means if Lieberman should
win the primary he won't need my help. Which is good, 'cause he ain't getting it.

15. Somehow, the way you phrased that really made me laugh.
Thanks, Calico, because these endorsements soured my mood today. This morning was the first time I resorted to the WTF emoticon.
