Apparently, Ohio Doesn't Care - NY Times Op/Ed
Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 04:58 AM by VolcanoJen
Ohio's Morning After

Not entirely accurate, but there's a hard truth in here.

Excerpt:

It’s summer, of course, so who wants to think about November? And right now there are other issues occupying our thoughts. Down at the pet store, for example, some ladies are protesting “puppy mills,” picketing with signs that show photos of sad dogs in small pens.

In the local paper, people write in to express outrage about the closing of a neighborhood elementary school, and a movement is under way among some angry parents to oust the loathed school board.

But when you mention the Senate candidates — the incumbent Republican, Mike DeWine, and the Democratic challenger, Representative Sherrod Brown — people’s eyes tend to glaze over. There is an expression of blank and wary politeness, as if you offered to tell them about an interesting dream you had last night.

1. Maybe average people are more astute than
the NYT gives them credit, they know it really does not matter.

Diebold will give the seat to whom it wants.

and nothing will change.

2. That's cynical
Ohioans have an excellent chance of taking back the statehouse (Strickland), and I happen to think DeWine's seat isn't as safe as he'd like to believe.

If the margin is big enough, we can marginalize Diebold to the point where we don't even think about it.

3. Sorry. Cynical is the only logical reaction
to crap like this.

8. Brown remains ahead in the polls
no matter how much money DeWine spends. He will win.

in my little corner of NE ohio ..it is on...we have more volunteers than we have ever had before..when we make phone calls we hear people telling us they voting strait dem or they can't wait to vote these clowns out.... we have people walking into the office asking to register vote asking for yard signs ...we have to tell them no yard signs until 30 days before the election . Our fund raisers have all brought more than expected. So somebody cares in ohio.

5. David Brooks opines...
...on the Chris Matthews panel show early Sunday a.m. - that DeWhine
is running an excellent campaign, "a model for Republicans..."
WTF? Where does he extract this? Sounds like Rove-Luntz spin
doctoring to me. Anybody have a viewpoint on this?

7. Interviewing guys in bars
isn't exactly representative of Ohio voters.

"people's eyes tend to glaze over" should read "the guy drinking beer in the bar's eyes glazed over" :eyes:

Actually this is good news. The GOP must be feeling very threatened to have to place a column like this one.

The media campaign to help DeWine win is operating at full speed.
