Up to 100 from opposing campaign disrupt Lamont's Greenwich rally

Lamont was greeted by a crowd of about 200 supporters and dozens of Lieberman campaign workers, some of whom followed Lamont and his family to their car.

Tom Swan, Lamont's campaign manager, complained that Lieberman's workers jostled Lamont's supporters and harassed the candidate's family.

"That was nothing but harassment," Swan said.

Swan called Democratic State Chairwoman Nancy DiNardo and asked her to intervene "before someone gets hurt."

Marion Steinfels, a Lieberman campaign spokeswoman, said the Lieberman workers had stayed within bounds.

"They went to Ned's rally in support of Joe Lieberman," she said. "My understanding was there was no inappropriate behavior."

Swan's not just blowing rhetoric. Here's an account of someone in the crowd-

Somewhere close to 100 LieberKidz showed up in Greenwich to disrupt the Lamont campaign rally....

Most of what the LieberKidz did was just generally obnoxious elbowing, jostling, and positioning to get themselves toward the front of the crowd with their signs, rudely stepping in front and blocking the views of people who were actually there to see Ned Lamont speak live for the first time and pay attention to all of the speeches. A few of the kids were openly hostile, talking loudly during speeches, but most spent their time moving around trying to block Lamont signs and didn't shout or try to drown out the speeches.

There was no large scale chanting or coordinated interruption from the LieberKidz, just the overall disruption that comes from having 100 Lieberman staffers talking to each other, distributing plastic golf toys to each other, and talking back to the incredulous Lamont supporters who'd ask them why they were there or ask them to move aside or stop blocking their view. The LieberKidz waited until the rally actually started to push themselves through the crowd that had already assembled in anticipation of the speeches, a strategy that of course caused maximum disturbance and annoyance to the patient and polite crowd already assembled.

I didn't witness any major clashes, just a lot of really defensive Lieberman staffers who pretended not to understand why so many people who had come to hear speeches were annoyed and disgusted by their behavior.

Tagaris, at the Lamont blog, said they were mostly quiet even though "at one point" he "was being followed around and mocked by some of the Lieberman protestors". "It was an amazing event, but it’s kind of sad when you have to leave with a sense of relief that no one got hurt," he wrote.

Protesters got sno-cones

"...everyone left with a sense of excitement and re-newed commitment towards elected Ned this Tuesday."

2. And Joe thinks this will get him votes?
I know people, mainly little old ladies, who will put up with a lot of things, but one thing they can't stand is people being impolite. Might sound ludicrous, but I think this tactic lost Holy Joe some of the little old lady vote.

23. Actually, I think they were hoping to cost Ned votes
by getting Ned's supporters pissed-off enough to do something that would
generate bad publicity.

3. Makes Joe look like a fool. He better be careful his disruptions will bac
backfire and make him look more desperate and unscrupulous than he already does.

5. Faschistic thuggery from the Lieberman camp.

He ought to be ashamed of himself.

So Steinfels says, "there was no inappropriate behavior."

I say Lieberman needs to escalate. The Lieberman campaign shouldn't let this upstart rich kid get away with stealing Joe's entitlement. They next should take up baseball bats and show those Lamont supporters what a mistake it would be to not vote for the Lieberfuhrer.

Edited on Sat Aug-05-06 10:39 AM by buddyhollysghost
We prefer less immaturity, not more.

How desperate DOH'mentum must be to act like this is gang warfare or Rush Week.

Egads, now I see why he must go!

11. Respectfully, I don't believe you can back that up
At no time have dozens (we'll go with the paper's number) of sign-bearing Lamont supporters -paid, as was the case with Joe's workers, or unpaid- muscled their way in front of anyone at a Lieberman rally.

14. Why don't you put out another respectful blackface caricature
In fact, there was a whole ton of pissing and moaning by the Unknown Millionaire's nut roots when they were prevented from disrupting the luncheon where Bill Clinton spoke.

It's hilarious to hear a campaign that's been entirely built on character assassination whine about being treated unfairly in any way.

15. "a handful of paid Lieberman shills" and Joe's lobbyst friend

As we spoke, I couldn't help but notice a familiar face in the crowd. For some reason, he tried to duck behind his anti-Ned signs when he noticed me trying to take his picture... But I finally caught him in a less guarded moment. I could be wrong...no, I'm not. That's our good "friend," paid lobbyist/paid Friend of Joe, Richard Goodstein!

18. I'm not a Lieberman fan, but
I don't see anything wrong with this, it's happened at several rallies I've been to in California and it just makes everyone work harder. It's fine if it remains peaceful.

19. I've seen LaRouche people at rallies, but they stayed off to the side
or at the entrance. They didn't wade into the crowd. I think I'd find that very rude. That it was done by paid workers of the opposing campaign takes it to another level, imo.

22. You're right, if they were allowed
to mix into the Lamont crowd and were being paid by the opposing campaign it would be terrible. I've been to rallies where we were a few feet apart but respected each others space. We yelled a lot but never got intwined.
