Missiles neutralizing Israeli tanks

Missiles neutralizing Israeli tanks

By BENJAMIN HARVEY, Associated Press Writer
44 minutes ago

JERUSALEM - Hezbollah's sophisticated anti-tank missiles are perhaps the guerrilla group's deadliest weapon in Lebanon fighting, with their ability to pierceIsrael's most advanced tanks.

Experts say this is further evidence that Israel is facing a well-equipped army in this war, not a ragtag militia.

Hezbollah has fired Russian-made Metis-M anti-tank missiles and owns European-made Milan missiles, the army confirmed on Friday.

In the last two days alone, these missiles have killed seven soldiers and damaged three Israeli-made Merkava tanks — mountains of steel that are vaunted as symbols of Israel's military might, the army said. Israeli media say most of the 44 soldiers killed in four weeks of fighting were hit by anti-tank missiles.

"They (Hezbollah guerrillas) have some of the most advanced anti-tank missiles in the world," said Yossi Kuperwasser, a senior military intelligence officer who retired earlier this summer.

Snip...

"To the best of my understanding, they (Hezbollah) are as well-equipped as any standing unit in the Syrian or Iranian armies," said Eran Lerman, a retired army colonel and now director of the Israel/Middle East office of the American Jewish Committee. "This is not a rat-pack guerrilla, this is an organized militia."

Is there such a thing as intelligence information anymore?

1. Be arrogant , assume that your enemy is ill-equipped and
your soldiers _will_ pay the penalty with their lives.

Has the world learned nothing from the Russian defeat in Afganistan and the American debacle in Iraq?

2. Lebanon Is Israel's Iraq.

They're shocked by the tenacity and violence of the resistance. But, the real guerilla and terrorism stuff hasn't even started yet.

The IDF will be worn down in Southern Lebanon the same we were in Central Iraq, if they're stupid enough to stay.

4. What could really complicate the problem much more is that...
many Christian Lebanese may start to fight back just because they are pissed off about what is happening to them. The Christian Lebanese people (45% of the population) are no friends of Hezbollah, but at the same time Hezbollah (which is a terrorist organization) did NOT attack them, just Israel. This war could get worse.

3. Israel ran into anti-tank missiles in one of their previous wars. As
I recall, their effectiveness depends a lot on the courage of the person firing the missile to hold their position after they have exposed it by launching.

It is a wire guided SACLOS (Semi-Automatic Command to Line-Of-Sight) missile, which means the sight of the launch unit has to be aimed at the target to guide the missile. The Milan can be equipped with a MIRA thermal sight, to give it night-firing ability.

8. Neither was I. I was talking about earlier wire-guided missiles,
they were used, I believe, in the 1973 War.

6. This is not good - it will only bring an escalation in

aerial bombardment from Israel. More softening up before further invasion.

Also more attacks on bridges, ports and border crossing to prevent resupply.

9. Sure wish ALL the killing would stop.
Not that I feel bad for the IDF - I fucking DON'T, at ALL, fuck the IDF as much as Hezbollah - but as long as this goes on, innocents on both sides die.

10. Lebanon is good anti-tank missle country
Not open desert, there are places to hide. Why did Israel do this operation? Did our government armtwist them to do it? It will be an expensive operation none the less. Did Bush twist arms for an attack on Hezbollah since he couldn't strike Iran directly? Russia was uncooperative for a strike on Iran. Why are Syria and Iran getting these missles so easily? Oh well back to American Idol.
