anymore. That's for the old-style Journalists (with a capital "J") who were in it for the sheer information brokering and truth-telling and muck-raking, and for being a witness to history. By now, I suspect, especially on TV, it's all about face-time. Most of the people on the air did not spend much time studying journalism, or taking seriously what the Edward R. Murrows of the world were about. Moreover, the people who DID, have been systematically discredited or banished, like Dan Rather and Helen Thomas. Most of 'em, like that nauseating richard wolffe who guests on Olbermann all the time, are LOATHE to say anything that'll get them a nasty phone call or email either from some White House dan bartlett/tony snow/kkkarl rove goon or their network brass (who will have just heard from said White House dan bartlett/tony snow/kkkarl rove goon).
Some of these majored in "communications," which is not the same as journalism, and could apply just as easily to public relations as to anything pertaining to actual news. And besides, if you look good, or photograph well, you'll go farther, whether you have brains OR cottage cheese between your ears these days.
I'm sure there's heavy pressure to uphold the bush-worshipping see no evil/hear no evil/speak no evil slant in the news, even while being forced to face the changing tides in this country. Many of 'em are walking a tightrope now, because they know which way the wind is blowing now, and it's NOT blowing bush's way.
tucker carlson all of a sudden turned a lot less smug on Election Night 2004, when the early exit polls were indicating that Kerry was going to win. All of a sudden he was walking a straight line down the middle, not being so snarky toward liberals or Dems or bush-opponents, and conceding several points in their favor on the air without any piss-ant put-down commentary. It's because he and others saw what was happening (albeit briefly). That's why you now have guys like him saying more frequently how they're personally opposed to the war (OH YEAH? Well, since WHEN???) when they were in the front row of the cheerleading section during the run-up, and were worshipping at bush's stuffed pants after the aircraft carrier photo-op.
I tell ya, that's what's going to make the Connecticut primary so interesting next Tuesday. If lieberman goes down - and everyone will peg it to the war - that's going to be like a thousand air horns blowing in each set of ears on camera and behind the scenes. It's gonna be a huge wakeup call, and they're going to make a LOT of it. It will be a watershed event if Ned Lamont prevails (as I hope he does). It'll send a REALLY GLARINGLY LOUD message that the war is a loser for everyone adn anyone involved, and if you want to survive, you better start coming out against it. And that lesson will not apply exclusively to politicians, either. The news media will take that EXTREMELY seriously.
Another thing to watch: the facial expressions and on-camera demeanor of die-hard or under-the-radar neoCONS like bill schneider at CNN and frank luntz (wherever he turns up). If they're on the air looking like they work at the morgue, you know their side is in DEEP trouble, regardless how they try to couch it with their words. I've seen this before especially with these two. They are NOT good poker players. Their faces give them away every time.
