More on the End Timer-in-Chief
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 07:56 AM by BobcatJH
Recently, I wrote about the frightening truth that "people who believe the End Times are upon us should never be given the means to bring them about." Yet that's exactly what we have in President Bush. And today, Saul Friedman writes about the 800-lb. gorilla in the room that the media have largely ignored:
There is an alien influence, mostly unpublicized, running like an undercurrent beneath the Bush administration's Middle East policies. It may help explain George W. Bush's single-mindedness, his oblivious inability to face reality as his war in Iraq, his war against terror and his policies towards Arabs and Israeli have collapsed.

I say "alien," because I believe this to be the first time in modern American history that a president's religion, in this case his Christian fundamentalism, has become a decisive factor in his foreign and domestic policies. It’s a factor that has been under-reported, to say the least, and that begs for press attention.

Bush, who says he reads the Bible daily, acknowledges his fundamentalist beliefs. Biblical and Middle East scholar Karen Armstrong writes in The Guardian, "Whatever Bush's personal beliefs, the ideology of the Christian right is both familiar and congenial to him. This strange amalgam of ideas can perhaps throw light on the behavior of a president who, it is said, believes God chose him to lead the world toward Rapture, who has little interest in social reform, and whose selective concern for life issues has now inspired him to veto important scientific research.

"It explains his unconditional support for Israel, his willingness to use 'Jewish End-Time warriors' to fulfill a vision of his own, arguably against Israel's best interest, and to see Syria and Iran ... as entirely responsible for the unfolding tragedy."

Noting that "the same time as Bush decided to veto the stem cell bill, Israeli bombs were taking the lives of hundreds of innocent Lebanese civilians, many of them children, with the tacit approval of the U.S. " And she suggested there is "a connection between a religiously motivated mistrust of science ... and a war in the Middle East."

As she notes, Bush and his administration not only rely on Christian fundamentalists, he espouses many of their ideals, including their belief that "the second coming of Christ is at hand" but Christ cannot return unless, "in fulfillment of Biblical prophecy, the Jews are in possession of the Holy Land."

Bush's hard-line support of Israel in the face of cries of protest from the rest of the world, and his refusal to put pressure on Israel, as his father and Ronald Reagan have done, has stopped a simmering rebellion of discontent among the ranks of the Christian right. But that does not mean Bush's views are catering to the right. Rather, Bush believes they're right.

3. It's One Thing For The American People To Elect A Person To...
Edited on Fri Aug-04-06 08:06 AM by global1
the presidency that is religious or has religion. I remember back when JFK was elected the controversy around him regarding his being Roman Catholic. When Clinton was president - I remember almost on a weekly basis seeing pictures of him attending church services.

But when I read the following passage regarding GWB:

"This strange amalgam of ideas can perhaps throw light on the behavior of a president who, it is said, believes God chose him to lead the world toward Rapture, who has little interest in social reform, and whose selective concern for life issues has now inspired him to veto important scientific research."

The thought of having a person in the WH that believes God chose him to lead the world toward Rapture - borders on lunacy.

We need to do more due diligence with our presidential candidates in the future to make sure that this does not happen again.

Er - that is if we get the chance.

4. Someone please tell me
How many times have the "end times" been predicted now? I lost count after it hit the double digits. Though I suppose when nothing happens this time its going to be a big let down to all the fundies out there.

Can't wait

9. It's been going on for well over 1000 years
but being wrong has not seemed to dampen the true believers ardour.

5. I remember during the Cuban missile crisis.
I was around 6 years old at the time. Our family was moderately religious catholic. While it was going on we would turn off the TV every night, get down on our knees and say the rosary out of fear that we would blow the planet all to hell.
That may sound a little crazy to some but it's not half as crazy as these nut jobs we have today that are on their knees every night praying for just the opposite. What sick times we live in.

7. End times
It is amazing how the end times are always spoken about when it affects Israel. What about the almost 1 million people that died with the fighting between the Hutu's & Tusi's in Africa. The dictators that killed millions in their lifetime. But no we only talk about the end times when it comes to a little war between Israel-Hezbollah. I do not want to diminish the effects of this war by stating that. But it is the truth this war is really insignificant compared to many others we have seen over the years.

11. I think this "End Timer " crap is baloney. Here's why:
Bush is surely taking advantage of the Relig Right's obsession w/ Israel only because it FITS HIS ME AGENDA. Which is about Oil, oil and oil, Money, money, & money, and oh yeah--world domination.

The religious crap is for show, and distracts us form seeing his real motives.

12. I agree with you. However, it wouldn't surprise me if he "hedges his bet"
by "believing" this stuff just in case it's true. Trying to con God, if you will. Basically he's going for the gold and power, but if it turns out the Rapture is true, he'll say he was there for God. I think that's how this guy works.
