The Cuban leader received treatment on a par with the best in the world. But most Cubans, reliant on the supposedly universal health system, have to pay for even basic drugs such as aspirin and the equivalent of £30 for "extras" such as X-rays. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2006/08/06/wcastro06.xml

5. That Telegraph story is pure bullshit!
Edited on Sun Aug-06-06 03:41 PM by Mika
I've been to many hospitals in Cuba and I've seen them in action. There are no charges for drugs used for treatment. There are no charges for x-rays and other such testing on a patient.

This story is pure fabrication.

*Qualifying statement* - there is an extra territorial embargo (and other sanctions) that the US has placed on Cuba known as the Helms-Burton law. This law prevents corporations from selling products to BOTH the US and Cuba. The company must choose between markets (you guess which market is larger and more lucrative, especially for drug makers). Bayer does not sell Aspirin to the Cuban health care system. There are other generic brands & types of pain killers available, and given to patients for free by their treating doctors. OTC brand name Aspirin is available from various black market sources and some tourist shops, but it is resold at exorbitant prices.

2. That captures his condescending speech perfectly!
Surprise Bushy, Cuba will handle the change in Cuba politics, it doesn't need your "help".

Cuban people.

Batista the American puppet and true capitalist pig, proved what OUR kind of corporate democracy can do to a small country...How the majority of the Cuban people were used as labor slaves, for exploiting Cuban resources (tobacco, sugar, etc.) for American corporations and to work in American owned business, Casinos & resorts.

The Cuban literacy rate, which the imperialist consciously love and need to keep at rock bottom levels, were at rock bottom levels under the pimp Batista. Second rate health care was only available to very few Cubans.

The country was turned into a gambling Mecca for Americans, Cuban women were perfect whores for vacationing Americans...The island beaches & resorts were exploited for rich tourist and the American "owned" and sold resorts & houses that the native Cubans worked in for slave wages...

Drugs & alcohol were cheap for the American tourist as the island, with Batista's blessing was used for anything Americans could think up, no matter how perverse and exploitative...

No government is perfect, but at least allow the people themselves to exploit and profit if they choose... Not some imperialistic exploitative giant like the US reaping & stealing the wealth with their capitalist brand of oppression.

Batista (and others) gave old Bush's type of democracy a shot for hundreds of years. And the Americans have wanted force that same exploitive democracy down the Cubans throats for year...What do you would happen if the US got their way again...would you expect the usual wonderful American BushCo changes?.

Listen to many of the Florida Cubans complaints, many were the rich class in Cuba under Batista and all they complain about is their lost of things, and money, land and lifestyle...that most Cubans never enjoyed under Batista's "democratic" Cuba.

That's the corporate democracy an exploitation so many in this country want again for Cuba, and Iraq, Iran, Central America, etc. etc...
