Pastor rips candidates who ‘pimp’ black church

By Susan Nolan
news@seacoastonline.com

PORTSMOUTH - The pastor of the New Hope Baptist Church said he is frustrated by presidential candidates who use his congregation for racially motivated photo opportunities rather than as a place for a serious discussion of issues.
-snip-

Hilson said Monday his criticism was aimed at presidential candidates whom he feels have taken advantage of the opportunity to visit the church, rather than truly listening to the concerns of the congregation. The photos taken during those visits can make it appear as if the pastor and his wife, Lady Hilson, endorsed those candidates, he said."I get (candidate) calls ... and they say ‘I want to come ... ’ and they say, ‘Can you have your wife at the door,’ to meet them ...," said Hilson. "That’s a photo op, that’s really clear.

"When the Dean people came they said ‘Can you be at the door and have your wife with you?’" he said.

Hilson noted that one of the photos taken during that Dean visit appeared in the Nov. 10 issue of Newsweek. The photo showed Dean standing beside Lady Hilson, but the caption did not indicate the picture was taken in New Hampshire, and it was used in a story about Dean seeking the southern African-American vote.

The Dean campaign indicated it was disappointed Hilson took the occasion of their candidate’s visit in a way that had not been intended.

Believe it or not an earlier thread on this article got locked because even though its an AP wire piece the link provided by the poster was to FAUX NEWS, which made it a "conservative news source."

1. You would think that Dean
or some of his supporters would have made sure the pastor wasn't offended in any way before the photo op. oops!

2. Well considering the pastor was considered a prop. . .
. . .why would Dean take the time to care?

33. if you read the article you will see how CMB behaved
at this church in contrast to dean, who the Reverend seems to feel, attempted to manipulate and misrepresent his wife, himself and his New Hampshire church in an effort to bolster dean's appeal to southern black voters.

36. Sadly, End Justifies the Means is the way of Dean

I have yet to see some core principle in Dean's Politics/Philosophy
that would not be compromised for the campaign's success.

3. Hmmm...the good pastor said he gets calls from candidateS.....
I wonder who the other ones were, besides Dean?

from the same article....

"On the other hand, Hilson, whose church has hosted Braun, Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Dean and Dick Gephardt, said he wants presidential candidates to continue coming to his church. "

Ah, there they are. Hey General Clark, when are you going....or was the Harlem Church photo op good enough?

5. I know we all look a like. . .
. . .but the pictures of Young, Rangel and Clark were from South Carolina. That's OK. . .I expect that from people who only see us a photo ops.

9. the location doesnt matter - but the pandering does.
And my advice is, if you don't want to get into this back and forth, stop your silly insinuations and outlandish accusations at every single thing Howard Dean does. It gets really really old....and I'll hip you to something else....it doesn't get you a single new convert. Negativity almost never does when it comes to democrats.

Save the negative slime attacks for Bush in the general - who is actually deserving of them.

Here is the link you asked for on the last thread:

News - December 25, 2003

Pastor tired of candidates
who 'pimp' black church

PORTSMOUTH (AP) - The pastor of a black church said he is frustrated by presidential candidates who use his congregation as a backdrop for campaign photos rather than a sounding board for a serious discussion of issues.

"I'm tired of people coming in here to pimp the church," the Rev. Arthur Hilson of New Hope Baptist Church said during a Sunday sermon in which he also endorsed the presidential candidacy of Carol Moseley Braun, a Democrat who is black.

"Come because you want to be here," Hilson appealed to the candidates. "Don't come here because you want to use me or our people."

And your behavior does? How laughable. I don't jump on every single thing that Dean does. . .I pick and choose my battles wisely. I am sure I swing at Dean a lot less than you swing at Clark. How many posts have you had deleted thus far?

16. He's too busy to visit. Gotta round up a ton of $20's from us little guys.
So he can match up with Chimpy's $200 million in the big one. When the smoke clears, Dr. Dean will be left with nothing but his memories and a pile of money.

17. OT but...
We're not allowed to quote conservative news sources here? What's up with that? That isn't really true is it? Sigh.

If so perhaps the "Democratic portion of the site name should be eliminated.

Oh, and for those who want to slam Clark for the pictures in the church in S.C., do keep in mind he was raised a Baptist...and that the Armed Forces are fully integrated. I have a feeling he felt quite comfortable being part of that congregation.

22. Why
would reporting on an article be flame bait?

The pastor said it, it happened, it was reported.

People running for office quite often get on other people's nerves and don't always think of the consequences...sounds like that's what happened here. I doubt the pastor was trying to "flame" anyone. LOL

26. Actually
what I know is that we all have to live with facts. Sometimes the facts are seemingly in our candidates favor and sometimes they aren't. We have to learn to deal with that, hopefully in a constructive way. It is through facts that we actually learn something about the person or persons involved. From this article I learned the pastor was peeved.

It's up to us to decide whether those facts bother us or not.

I don't consider facts to be flames.

Inuendo, rumor, half truths, outright lies...those are the things I would call flames.

I guess it depends on who's name gets mentioned as to whether its considered flaming. :-)

One of the best distinctions between what flames are and what news is some people just don't want to hear.

28. i'm willing to give Dean the benefit of the doubt on this
he gets busy - he's running all over meeting people and trying to fit as much as he can into his schedule... he wants a photo op, gets one, and it gets run around a different campaign tactic.

"New Hope Baptist has always embraced open doors, but as the black church we have been a place that was frequented by those who sought to gain something," he said

So the guy tried for a photo op in a church that get's used for photo-ops - it sounds like some handlers were, perhaps, a little aggressive about getting it all the way he wanted it. And then the campaign used it to try to make connections to southern african americans. Sounds like typical politics to me... nothing to be exceedingly proud of, but imo nothing really untoward. Other issues have more heft.
