Rove wants to subject civilians to military tribunals
http://www.thestate.com/mld/thestate/news/world/15176692.htm

"Under the proposed procedures, defendants would lack rights to confront accusers, exclude hearsay accusations, or bar evidence obtained through rough or coercive interrogations. They would not be guaranteed a public or speedy trial and would lack the right to choose their military counsel, who in turn would not be guaranteed equal access to evidence held by prosecutors.

Detainees also would not be guaranteed the right to be present at their own trials, if their absence is deemed necessary to protect national security or individuals."

Remember when the loonies on the right thought that Clinton wanting everyone to have health insurance was the first step on a slippery slope to fascism? I wonder what they think of this.

1. Technically, it COULD be done under the PATRIOT ACT II --
unless the Supreme Court rules that this particular section is unconstitutional.

2. First off, what's Rove got to do with it? The story doesn't mention him...
unless I missed something. Which I probably did. I'm dumb like that.

Second, I find it almost amusing -- almost, but not quite -- that this legislation will replace the military tribunals ruled unconstitutional in Hamdan v. Rumsfeld. How are these tribunals any more constitutional than the last ones?

3. Rove makes all of the decisions that come from
"the White House". You think Smirk understnads any of this stuff? He's at a Whitewell fundraiser.

in fact, before Musharraf's coup, they insisted that uppity civilians be subjected to the "extra-judicial" process (military tribunal) if they were engaged in crimes of a political nature or anything that could be construed as impacting the interests of the government.

sweet. I can't wait to start using it on republicans. And especially the death penalty advocates, since most of them get fastracked to summary execution.

I think it even got so bad in Karachi at one point that you could have an ad hoc tribunal, i.e., a couple of soldiers would just show up at your house, accuse you of something and shoot you. Like I said, I can't wait until we're rounding up republicans.

Thank you Rove, et al, for giving us the tools to clean you up.
