Quinnipiac poll: Lamont Leads Lieberman 54 - 41
Momentum for Ned Lamont, the anti-war Connecticut U.S. Senate candidate, increases as he rolls to a 54 - 41 percent lead over incumbent Sen. Joseph Lieberman among likely Democratic primary voters, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

This compares to a 51 - 47 percent Lamont lead among likely Democratic primary voters in a July 20 poll by the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University.
...
"Sen. Lieberman's campaign bus seems to be stuck in reverse. Despite visits from former President Bill Clinton and other big name Democrats, Lieberman has not been able to stem the tide to Lamont," said Quinnipiac University Poll Director Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D.

"The incumbent has just five days to turn this race around, but never count out a veteran with his experience."

"Three months ago, Lamont was virtually unheard of, except perhaps on the blogs. As Democrats get to know Lamont better, they like what they see. Lamont has established himself as a credible alternative to Lieberman," Dr. Schwartz added.

1. Yet another poll showing Joe's steady decline
He will lose this primary, and he will lose as an independent.

43. Nah, they already did one that I remember.
They set it up presuming that Lamont won the primary and Lieberman ran as an independent. Lieberman was ahead in that poll by quite a few points. The problem is that too many Republicans like Joe and would vote for him, especially with the whole gambling thing with Schlesinger.

44. That was a long time ago.
The most recent poll had Lieberman and Lamont tied at 40% if Joe ran as an independent. That was the lowest showing Lieberman had yet in such a contest.

The reality is, Lieberman's support is collapsing inside AND OUTSIDE the party.

If you want a Democrat as Connecticut's senator, Ned Lamont is now the ONLY choice.

Joe is doomed in the primary, and will likely lose by such a large margin that an independent campaign on his part couldn't possibly be credible.

Your boy is going to lose. Connecticut(and the nation)are saying no to the war.

Lamont has 2/3 of it right now. The grassroots/netroots is overwhelmingly for him, and after the NYT endorsement, and Colbert, the media is at least not against him and has presented him as credible Senatorial material. The political establishment is still in Lieberman's corner, but after he loses the primary he won't have a leg of the triangle to stand on anymore.

Lieberman is betting that the general election will be a whole new ballgame. He can recapture establishment support by turning to Republicans, he can captalize on what he believes will be stronger grassroots/support by reaching out to Republicans and Independents who lean Republican, and the conservative, establishment bent of the media outlets consumed by the broader general election voters may give him back an advantage there.

It will be interesting to see what happens with regard to the triangle in the next round. But this round is gonna go to Lamont and that might be enough of a tipping point for him. Lieberman is going to have a loser's stigma on him after this and Lamont is going to have the momentum. And that's good news for Lamont because the media loves to frame elections in terms of winners and losers with their "horserace" coverage. I just think that there's going to be some general sense among the less attentive voters that when someone gets beat in a primary like Lieberman will that person's time is up and it's time for a change.

Not even Diebold can save him with that margin. He really needs to start looking for something to do with his life come January of 2007. Running as an Independent is not only going to further damage his reputation but runs the risk of dragging down other democrats with positions similar to his (eg. Clinton).

So perhaps you out-of-state know-it-alls will finally STFU and let us Nutmeggers choose our own damn candidate next Tuesday?

45. The whole world is watching. Lieberman is much of what's wrong with
our system, a clever snake oil salesman who manipulates those who don't take the time to dig deep enough to recognize obvious hypocrisy. Lieberman and many like him in the center and right engage in the persuasion by personality; politics by publicity; election through trust based on a foundation of sand.

Lieberman never fails to remind us that he is a God fearing man who places his faith at the center of his life. He says it over and over and the poodle press repeats it as though it were truth. In addition, Lieberman has a good pitch and a facade of friendliness.

The truth is different. How central is morality when:

-- You receive a major honor by your party presidential nominee and you run a vapid campaign culminating in a complete withdrawal from the field when the election is stolen by thugs in Florida; what does this say about the morality of fighting evil and loyalty to your party?

-- You criticize your President for a lack of morality regarding sex and then three years later vote for a war authorization that produces profound suffering and death, anticipated by many, but glossed over by you, the paragon of morality; what does this say about what "morals" are to you and the relative importance of human life and why have you not criticized this president for his immorality?

-- You continue to support that war despite the overwhelming evidence that it is a humanitarian disaster (which belies any excuse you have for voting for it in the first place); what does this say about your tolerance for suffering and death for no apparent purposes?

Joe Lieberman is a "good" man, a "moral" man. That's the facade we've been sold by Lieberman and the complicit press. It is a fraudulent message. The great Democrats in Connecticut realize this and are going to send Lieberman packing.

That's the message the whole world will receive. The United States is awakening, the citizens of this largely prosperous state have awakened, no thanks to the press. They are showing that the lies told and repeated are losing their effectiveness. The people have new sources of information, they can read the hand writing on the wall, they have had enough.

This has to happen and Lamont needs to win the general. This is the greatest political story in the United States right now and it is a harbinger. No more lies, no more hypocrites parading in front of us with false promises, no more compliant citizenry. It's over.

And his adoration of Bush has torpedoed him. LaMont has been bashing Lieberman's support of Bush in advertising and the voters are responding. And LaMont is in fact a very good, smart and articulate candidate.

Tusday's primary will represent a complete repudiation of Bush and rethugs will be scared shitless of any linkage to Bush. Tuesday could very well represent the effective end of the Bush pResidency.

51. ABC News Poll: Conn. Voters Still Back Lieberman
HARTFORD, Conn. Jan 11, 2006 (AP)— Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman's support of the war in Iraq apparently has cost him some support, but not enough to threaten his re-election in November, according to a poll released Wednesday.

Sixty-two percent of Connecticut voters approve of the way he is handling his job, while 24 percent do not and the rest didn't know, according to the telephone survey.

Seventy-five percent of Republicans, 61 percent of unaffiliated voters and 59 percent of Democrats said Lieberman deserves to be re-elected.

"While Sen. Lieberman has lost support among some Democrats, probably because of his strong support for the war in Iraq, he helps make up for it with support from Republicans," said Quinnipiac pollster Douglas Schwartz.

"Any senator running for re-election this year would be extremely happy to have Lieberman's poll numbers," he said.
