Help the campaign of a great Dem who is in a primary race with a good Dem
I support Kweisi Mfume for Senate

http://www.mfumeforsenate.com/index.php

Here in Maryland, Democrats are in the enviable position of having a number of really good candidates vying for the right to defend the Senate seat of the retiring Paul Sarbanes. Ben Cardin, one of our sitting Congressmen is running and is the 'conventional wisdom' candidate - and for good reason. He's a rock solid Democrat, a popular incumbent in his district, and has a senatorial demanor not unlike that of the retiring Sarbanes. There is also the third place guy, Josh Rales, an unabashed liberal and a very good man in his own right.

But Kweisi Mfume is an **exceptional** candidate.

His personal story is the stuff of movies. After losing his mother at the age of 16, the Baltimore city kid began to run with gangs and was headed very much in the wrong direction. He dropped out of school and was really on a typical inner city downward spiral. Following his own inner compass he changed course as a young man, starting with his GED, then a degree from Morgan State after first attending comunity college. This was followed by an advanced degree from Johns Hopkins in International Studies.

He's been a community activist, a radio commentator, a city councilman, a US Congressman, a television host with his own public affairs program, "The Bottom Line" for nine years, and most recently, President and CEO of the NAACP. While in Congress, he was no back bencher. He served as chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, was a member of the Ethics Committee and involved directly in legislation concerning matters of fair credit, equal opportunity and matters affecting the disabled.

He is a very smart man. He's media savy. He's well known nationally. He's never one to back down and has been staunchly antiwar since before antiwar was cool.

While I support him because he's good for Maryland, make no mistake. He would be GREAT for the country and for the Democratic party. I remember well his teevee show. He would be THE PERFECT guy to have on all the yakking head shows. I'm telling ya, he's the real deal! Instant national creds and a guy who will be an A-List interview for our side.

His campaign was pretty much given up for dead when, after he announced, Cardin jumped in and sucked all the air of the room. But how things have changed. Where Cardin's been running a safe campaign, one foot in front of the other, staying above the fray and not engaging the other candidates, Mfume, low on cash and big on guts has been going, almost literally, door to door talking to actual people. Real retail politics. Nursing homes and company picnics. Churches and fire hall suppers. That's right. He talks to **us**. We the people. Face to face and one on one. How refreshing.

And it has paid off. The latest poll that tests the Dem primary and the chances of each candidate against Republican candidate Michael Steele, Mfume comes out on top.

Like his life, his campaign for Senate is a study in tenacity and reaching for more, working harder and doing what it takes.

But he needs cash. I know we get hit for all sorts of contributions, but please consider a few bucks for this guy. I've never been as inspired for a local candidate as I am for Kweisi Mfume. And I'm almost 60 years old. That's a lotta local candidates!

Go to his website. Read up on him. Study his positions on anything. I promise you'll be as impressed as I am.

Maryland will be so much better for him being our junior Senator, but so will you. So will every Democrat in the country.

He will be **exceptional**.

2. Michael Steele is Maryland's own version of Blackwell
Steele's been connected at the hip to Rove's gang of thugs and we're awaiting all sorts of shitstorms to brew up around here.

Fortuately, Steele has a propensity to stick his size 10s in his mouth. A LOT.

4. Sorry, but Kweisi has fathered too damn many children out of wedlock
He's an articulate guy. I used to live in Baltimore, so I can certainly vouch for that. But his personal behavior is downright embarassing. His Baltimore constituency might have been able to overlook his pecadillos (apparently the board of the NAACP wasn't quite as sanguine), but I'm not sure the rest of the state's electorate will. And how many more sex scandals do we need after Clinton and McGreevy?

And would be quite happy to tolerate some sexual escapades as the price for a candidate who'll end this war.

Or maybe I'm hopnig for too much :eyes:

6. Cardin is in the process of lowering the hammer on Mfume.

$500,000 worth of TV ad's are starting to hit the Baltimore and Washington airwaves.

Mfume does have a great story to tell, but unfortunately for him, he's not as strong as Cardin in the general, and a lot of people can see that.

Mfume still has a shot though. Josh Rales (D- "r") is spending millions of his own money on advertising and thats bad news for Cardin, because Rales could peel off 5-7% of the vote, which could swing this thing to Mfume.

Im obviously with Cardin. He's a great legislator w/ a long list of accomplishments stretching from Annapolis all the way to DC.
