Bush "Believes in the forgiveness of sins for all who seek forgiveness"

Press Briefing by Tony Snow
James S. Brady Briefing Room

For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
August 1, 2006

Q Yes, the Reverend Ted Baehr, as chairman of the Christian Film and Television Commission, says that while Mel Gibson's behavior was shocking, his apology should be taken to heart. And Attorney William Donohue, of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, said, "What Mel Gibson said was indefensible, anti-Semitic and irresponsible. Fortunately, he's apologized, which is being rejected by some who should know better." In 2003 Roman Polanski, the convicted child rapist, received a standing ovation when he won an Oscar. Nice to know what really offends Hollywood. And my question: Does the President forgive Mel Gibson or not? (Laughter.)

MR. SNOW: The President believes in the forgiveness of sins for all who seek forgiveness.

3. And what happens to "folks" who will never admit that they've done
anything wrong, like oh, I dunno, "start an illegal, unprovoked war", for example? What should be done with them?

6. I am not religious, but I do believe in karma
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, you reap what you sow, etc. I do not believe that you can be an eveil person all your life, then suddenly ask for forgiveness and it will all be OK. You gotta pay........

9. Yes, we'll always have those Karla Faye transcripts.

Republican presidential candidate Gary Bauer criticized Gov. George W. Bush Tuesday for making fun of an executed Texas woman in an interview Bush gave to Talk magazine.

"I think it is nothing short of unbelievable that the governor of a major state running for president thought it was acceptable to mock a woman he decided to put to death," Bauer said of Bush.

Bush is portrayed in Talk as ridiculing pickax killer Karla Faye Tucker of Houston for an interview she did with CNN broadcaster Larry King shortly before she was executed last year. Just before her execution date, Tucker appealed for clemency on the grounds that she had become a born-again Christian.

" `Please,' Bush whimpers, his lips pursed in mock desperation, `don't kill me,' "

8. Guess he'd have to believe that, wouldn't he?
That's the problem with these fundies...they truly believe they can do anything, absolutely anything...even murder and rape...and then just ask for forgiveness.

15. I really don't care what the "president" believes in
He believes he's God. Why is it up to the president to forgive Mel Gibson? I've always heard that crazy people think they're God. Bush needs to ask for forgiveness for himself because of all the hell he's putting everyone through.

16. his 'forgiveness' sure seems a lot like vengence to me-
If he's expecting the kind of 'forgiveness' he offers others, he's screwed.

("forgive us our sins, AS (in equal measure) we forgive those who sin against us".

Oh, oh george-
