Had lunch with a Republican voting friend at a favorite watering hole and as usual the conversation turned to politics. He's on my email list--the list I send editorials to about Republican vs Democratic issues--so he knows what's coming when he agrees to have lunch.
We went back and fourth, point for point, and he finally uttered the words that tell me he has no answer and no defense for the current Republican party, "Well, Democrats are just as bad . . ."
That's a sure sign that he's given up and can't defend his voting record. So I pat him on the shoulder and say, "I understand. It's like me and the sailboat. I should have sold it two years ago but I just didn't want to admit that I couldn't afford it. You're there on all the important issues but you just can't force yourself to admit it and vote Democrat."
He just sat there and stared at his empty beer mug.
If he doesn't vote Democrat, he'll just stay home.
