I voted. Not many issues for a Dem voter in KS but machine was interesti
the vote worker had to put a device into a slot to start it up. On the left hand side, there was an adding machine type paper that stamped the vote on paper and when I confirmed, it ran all my choices and then advanced the paper to blank for the next voter.

1. At least they had paper in the printer and you could see the print
Here in OHIO, the printer ran, no visual sign of paper so you could not check your ballot.
When I asked about that, I was told that the printer recorded your vote and that it was OK, this was from a Democratic worker. I was infuriated.

2. the next, very necessary, step. is to do random audits.
manually counting the paper and comparing it to the tabulator tally.

then

doing full manual recounts if there is any discrepancy.

3. Voting in Kansas
I heard two of the precincts in my county have the wrong ballets. How is it possible to have the wrong ballets?

4. What happens if you don't confirm?
That's one thing I don't quite get about the machines with paper trails. What if you notice and oops or the tape disagrees but is already printed? Does is stamp "void" on it then advance so you can vote again?

6. We've got a stealth Dem running for BoE in my district
I'll be voting for Waugh, not Jesse Hall.

Hall told The Chieftan he thought Waugh was spending too much time "fighting" the current board on issues that he said most District 1 residents considered settled, including the new science standards that redefine science to include the supernatural, and the opt-in sex education policy adopted by the board this year.

He said he based that finding on his meeting about 100 families he'd met while going door-to-door campaigning.

A political blog, Red State Rabble, has described Hall as a "stealth fundamentalist candidate" because he is supported by Celtie Johnson, an anti-evolution crusader.

Hall said "Only one of the three words in quotes is correct: ‘candidate.'" He said he did know Johnson.

But probably not in the biblical sense.

I want Waugh to continue fighting the new science standards and I want her to continue fighting against an opt-in sex ed program. She's got my vote.

8. When I Moved From Kansas in 2002
We had just voted out a fundie state school board. Isn't there something in the State Constitution allowing us (you, now, I guess) not to have to fight the same battles over & over again?

13. Unfortunately no. These KRAP-ture kids don't take no for an answer.
And they WILL be back, if defeated this time. They will be back, EVERY TIME thereafter, as long as they get election results they don't like. Unfortunately, they never give up. Which is why we can't afford to, either.

NEVER drop your guard.

NEVER grow complacent.

NEVER give up.

10. Voted - optical scanner. I also complained
At least there's a paper trail.

There was also this big honking "My heroes have always been cowboys, Bush 04" parked at the entrance. It was at least a foot long and 4" to 5" in height and full color. Since we (me and my husband) were the only voters there, I checked with the poll workers and the car didn't belong to them. I told them that they needed to find out to whom the car belong and have it removed. I also told them I was calling in a complaint and I would drive by in a while to make sure the car was removed.

I got home and called the clerk's office. The only exception to bumperstickers is if it belongs to someone who is voting. They promised to get the car removed. I told them I would go back by and make sure it had been removed in about half an hour. They said they could probably get it done it that time but for it would be gone (even if they had to tow it at the owner's expense) within the hour. I will go by and check. If it is still there I will file a formal complaint.

12. Douglas
Edited on Tue Aug-01-06 03:09 PM by Mabus
Thankfully we got a Dem (Jamie Shew) in the clerk's office. He was elected in 2004.

on edit: Neither Waugh nor Hill were on my ballot. I voted straight Dem with one exception. I just couldn't vote for Moore this time. I'm writing a letter to tell him why. I'll vote for him in Nov. and, as you know, he's got no opposition for the primary so he'll be on the ballot.

14. update: I got pictures
The car was moved by the time I drove back by. But I will keep an eye out for this type of stuff now that my polling place has been moved to a church.

15. Voted this evening. I was given a choice between the
"electronic" voting machine or the paper ballot (optical scanner}. The lady got a earful. I told her I wanted a paper verification for my vote to assure that it was counted. I told her that there were so many problems nationwide with the "electronic" machine that I could not be sure of my vote being counted. She looked at me in stunned silence. ( I was very polite and at no time raised my voice). Then I just said "Paper please." She said there have only been a few that wanted to try it. I said that if these machines are used exclusively in the future, I will be voting absentee.
