Mary Landriu wants to take us fishing off an oil rig in the Gulf of Mex.

really! she wants to show us how clean the water is under oil rigs and how full of fish they are.

she was on c-span's Wash. Journal this morning with charts, maps and bullshit. she's touting for more drilling in the Gulf and by gosh and by golly it will bring in more money to La.

and she said they made an agreement with Jeb of Fl. to keep rigs a certain amount space away from Fl. shores so the tourists and motel/hotel people won't be upset. but she also hopes to convince Floridians of the wonderfulness of oil rigs and how clean they are and what money makers they are.

she said cars put more toxins in the Gulf then oil rigs/tankers, etc. do.

her pockets noticeably bulged with oil/gas baron bribe money.

tsk

2. In some ways she is correct
Oil rigs are great fishing /diving grounds, they provide structure and therefore shelter for a lot of fish. Out in Texas the charter boats go out to the rigs on a regular basis. The toxins that do get spilled tend to sink to the bottom hundreds of meters below or are swept away/diluted. The problems come when a hurricane comes and breaks one off....then you find out that opening a hole to an oil deposit and leaving the hole open leads to lots of oil on your beaches. But until then...

3. wondering if what you say is true - I've read reports that under rigs

are dead zones.

5. Not that I have seen
The rigs around east Texas are pretty interesting to dive around. I also had a collegue who did a study on the effects of rigs on the organisms that live in sediments. They found effects (changes in species distribution and numbers) but not as severe as what you find around a storm runoff or sewage outfall pipe, and the effects faded pretty quickly away from the rigs. This was a suprise. They did not, however, look at rigs that had leaked oil.

6. Retired warships are commonly used as artificial reefs
My only concern really is the water that is around it and yes, there is a risk of spillage which I would like to see addressed.

8. and before sinking the ships, they are totally cleaned of any toxic

substances. this takes a lot of money and time. they are not just sunk willy nilly.

10. She was also advocating for nuclear energy
WTF? I don't get it. I really don't. Why isn't she advocating clean energy resources like wind power or solar energy? I just don't get it.

11. And have all the people complaining about...
offshore rigs reduced their own energy consumption and have plans for others to reduce theirs so that we don't need the oil?

Or is the electricity for the air conditioners, gas in the pumps, and heating oil just supposed to appear magically?

13. In Katrina's path, in the path of most hurricanes?
And I think I read the oil would not be available for years? And doesn't a lot of the gulf belong to Cuba and other countries? It is not that simple.
