I think peacekeepers...

13. Possibly because Israel struck a UN compound in Lebanon in 1996.
Over 100 civilians died. The UN and Amnesty International concluded the strike was likely intentional.

Also, a Reuters report today said the post had been fired on fourteen times this afternoon.

I posted the Qana incident from 1996 here:

3. if not targeted-Israel should be charged with War Crimes-no less
Israel had no right to bomb the infrastructure of Lebannon which does not control Hezbollah; which was created as a result of the israeli invasion of 1982.
Madame Arbour, a respected judge on the World Court, in the Hague has indicated that Israel has indeed committed War Crimes.

Unfortunately the usual apologists for Israel, like 'mr torture', lawyer, Alan Dershowitz has suggest she be removed.

Time to boycoytt Israel--and provide some real hope for peace

5. Remember what happened to the U.N. headquarters in Iraq?
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 05:52 PM by Dover
That too was likely an inside job...Israelis or Americans. It killed a prominent and beloved U.N. official, among others. They were also targeting reporters....and then saying "oops".

They don't want the U.N. interfering........PERIOD!

15. I heard/read it also, here:
Speaker of the Iraqi parliament blames Jews for insurgency

In calling for an apology from the Iraqi PM for his remarks about Israel, Democratic House member Jan Schakowsky also cited this lovely quote from the Speaker of the Iraqi parliament:

“On July 13th, the Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament claimed that there was a Jewish conspiracy which was responsible for the insurgency in Iraq. He was quoted as saying: “Some people say 'we saw you beheading, kidnapping and killing…These acts are not the work of Iraqis. I am sure that he who does this is a Jew and the son of a Jew. I can tell you about these Jewish, Israelis and Zionists who are using Iraqi money and oil to frustrate the Islamic movement in Iraq.”

Here's a link Rep. Schakowsky's statement: http://www.house.gov/schakowsky/PressRelease_7_25_06_Ha...

9. That's pretty far-fetched.
I think the Berg beheading is fishy (no spurting blood, Zarqawi suddenly has two legs and isn't dead after all, etc), but don't see where Israel is behind these beheadings.

But it is true they have formed false al Qaeda cells in the past, so who the hell knows?

10. There was alot of speculation about that here at DU when the first
"beheading" happened. The whole thing smelled like a fake.

And the Brits were caught dressed as Arabs shooting at Iraqi police...that is a fact not speculation. And babies in incubators and female heroines who aren't actually heros, and on and on and on....

18. Bottom Line. Innocent until proven guilty.
Passing on completely unsubstantiated speculation about Israel that is this damning is not responsible. We can all sit here and intentionally invent a dozen new conspiracy theories based on things that might seem believable, and you know, maybe one or two of them might even accidentally stumble onto the truth, but which ones? And what about the ones that end up being completely hot air and paranoia? I would never make an accusation like that without having a lot of good evidence handy.

19. Well, when governing bodies, the courts and the media are so corrupt
Edited on Tue Jul-25-06 06:52 PM by Dover
people have a tendency to fall back on their own instinctive response to events and that inner truth gauge we all have...better known as a bullshit meter. That's just natural and not a bad thing. It certainly diminishes blind trust. But such a corrupt environment also breeds mistrust and paranoia. Just ask a Russian or a Chinese citizen who will look over their shoulder before answering. That is the climate the Bushies have created with the help of Israel who's tactics and intelligence the U.S. has adopted as a model, which essentially ignores troublesome things like the Geneva Conventions, International laws, the World Court, and the U.N. lest it interfere.

17. From Yahoo news:
2 dead, 2 missing after U.N. post hit

By HUSSEIN DAKROUB, Associated Press Writer 10 minutes ago

An Israeli bomb destroyed a U.N. observer post on the border in southern Lebanon, killing two peacekeepers and leaving two others feared dead in what appeared to be a deliberate strike, U.N. chief Kofi Annan said.

The bomb made a direct hit on the building and shelter of the observer post in the town of Khiyam near the eastern end of the border with Israel, said Milos Struger, spokesman for the U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon known as UNIFIL.

Annan issued a statement saying two U.N. military observers were killed with two more feared dead. Earlier, U.S. Ambassador John Bolton said the Security Council was informed that four officers were killed, but he had no other information.

Rescue workers were trying to clear the rubble, but Israeli firing "continued even during the rescue operation," Struger said.

As reports of the attack emerged, Annan rushed out of a hotel in Rome following a dinner with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Saniora.

"I am shocked and deeply distressed by the apparently deliberate targeting by Israeli Defence Forces of a U.N. Observer post in southern Lebanon," Annan said in the statement.

Annan said in his statement that the post had been there for a long time and was marked clearly, and was hit despite assurances from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that U.N. positions would not be attacked.

"I call on the goverment of Israel to conduct a full investigation into this very disturbing incident and demand that any further attack on U.N. positions and personnel must stop," Annan said in the statement.

U.N. officials said four observers were in the post when the bomb hit, and the building had been destroyed. Two bodies had been recovered and two were unaccounted for, apparently still in the rubble. They spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. ...
