Nobel Peace Prize Winner: "i would love to kill George bush"
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 10:33 PM by welshTerrier2
it's really hard to add much analysis or insight to the story below ... it sort of speaks for itself ...

let's keep in mind though, that much of the embargo imposed by the US against the Iraqi people was enforced with a Democrat in the White House ... perhaps someday we'll learn that putting the squeeze on civilian populations in the hope that they overthrow their government when conditions become intolerable is inhumane, morally reprehensible and unconscionable ...

source: http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,19902313-29677,00.htm

NOBEL peace laureate Betty Williams displayed a flash of her feisty Irish spirit yesterday, lashing out at US President George W.Bush during a speech to hundreds of schoolchildren. <skip>

"My job is to tell you their stories," Ms Williams said of a recent trip to Iraq.

"We went to a hospital where there were 200 children; they were beautiful, all of them, but they had cancers that the doctors couldn't even recognise. From the first Gulf War, the mothers' wombs were infected.

"As I was leaving the hospital, I said to the doctor, 'How many of these babies do you think are going to live?'

"He looked me straight in the eye and said, 'None, not one'. They needed five different kinds of medication to treat the cancers that the children had, and the embargoes laid on by the United States and the United Nations only allowed them three."

on edit: i believe the quote in the subject line is referring to GWB and not GB ... this point is somewhat clearer if you read the entire article ... nevertheless, i removed the "W" from the subject line to adhere to the exact quote provided in the article ...

1. Is that really true? I didn't agree with BC on eberything, but I
can't believe he would have endorsed witholding meds from anyone. I also don't believe the UN would have limited the number of meds anyone could receive. Something just doesn't sound right with this story.

2. the embargo of Iraq
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 10:10 PM by welshTerrier2
i've read accounts that hundreds of thousands and possibly over a million Iraqi civilian deaths were attributed to the embargo ...

i expect if Clinton knew of any specifically horrible component of the embargo, he would have remedied the problem ... but there were probably millions of little detailed policies that defined what could pass into Iraq and in what quantities that was determined far below Clinton's pay grade ...

enforcing the embargo that deprived Iraqis of the necessities of life was never a good idea ... while some progress may have been made eventually under the "oil for food" program, it's clear embargoes like the one imposed on Iraq are not moral in that they target innocent civilian populations ...

13. Welsh, yes he knew. M. Albright said it was worth it.
Lesley Stahl on U.S. sanctions against Iraq: We have heard that a half million children have died. I mean, that's more children than died in Hiroshima. And, you know, is the price worth it?

Secretary of State Madeleine Albright: I think this is a very hard choice, but the price--we think the price is worth it.

Mr. C is gonna campaign for holyJoe the war lover. Makes sense.

11. Uhhhhh, He Did ...
My minister went over to Iraq in the mid-90's, along with a conentration camp survivor, Helen Caldicott, and many other medical, legal and other people who felt these sanctions were inhumane. They went there to defy the sanctions and bring such drugs to the children who needed them there. They all were fined $10,000and now Bert Sachs (the concentration survivor) is fighting for his life because he has no health insurance. Bert survived the Nazi war camps as a child and has worked for peace most of his adult life. I can only tell you it is true and Clinton was silent when these people went over to Iraq, as well as supportive when they were tried and fined.

3. There is no "W" in that Bush headline
George W. Bush was passed out drunk somewhere in Mexico during the Gulf War, that was Poppy Bush that was President.

4. i struggled with that ... see what you think ...
here's another excerpt:

NOBEL peace laureate Betty Williams displayed a flash of her feisty Irish spirit yesterday, lashing out at US President George W.Bush during a speech to hundreds of schoolchildren.

Campaigning on the rights of young people at the Earth Dialogues forum, being held in Brisbane, Ms Williams spoke passionately about the deaths of innocent children during wartime, particularly in the Middle East, and lambasted Mr Bush.

"I have a very hard time with this word 'non-violence', because I don't believe that I am non-violent," said Ms Williams, 64.

"Right now, I would love to kill George Bush." Her young audience at the Brisbane City Hall clapped and cheered.

from the above, i concluded her reference to "mr. bush" meant George W. bush ... it's kind of hard to know based on the way the story was written ...

i added the "W" to the subject line based on the author's first paragraph ...

what do you think?

5. the actual headline is "Peace prize winner 'could kill' Bush"
Edited on Mon Jul-24-06 10:46 PM by IndianaGreen
While she does attack Junior Bush, she is also telling us about children that were exposed to DU in the Gulf War, which was Poppy Bush's war. Her criticism of the US-induced UN embargo should also be levied against Bill Clinton who allowed a million Iraqi children to die. War crimes in Iraq are truly a bipartisan indictment!

On edit:

I took out the nonsense about this being LBN. It is not!

6. see my post just above yours for my response ...
i changed my subject line to adhere to the quote but i believe she was referring to "W" ... my extract focussed on damage from the embargo but the full article set the context as her current trip to Iraq and i believe she was referring to "W" ... hard to say though ...

and yes, Mr. Bill has some splainin to do as well ...

Alas, when it comes to the Middle East no one has clean hands. Vietnam is still suffering from the toxins we dropped over there!

8. a google search showed the following ...
the following came from a write-up of someone who was in the audience when she made the comment ... to me, it sounds like this author also concluded she meant "W" ...

Next I listened to Betty Williams speak. She started her speech out quoting Lee Iacocca. “There are people who make things happen, watch things happen and wonder what the hell happened.” Then she said “I would love to kill George Bush right now.” She refused to address him as our President.
