"All right. You've covered your ass, now."
If this doesn't tell you anything then I give up!!!!

Ron Suskind, George W. Bush and the Aug. 6, 2001, PDB

Ron Suskind's "The One Percent Doctrine" is out this week, and the Washington Post's Barton Gellman says it's full of "jaw-dropping stories" about the Bush administration's war on terror.

Or lack thereof.

We've known for years now that George W. Bush received a presidential daily briefing on Aug. 6, 2001, in which he was warned: "Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S." We've known for almost as long that Bush went fishing afterward.

What we didn't know is what happened in between the briefing and the fishing, and now Suskind is here to tell us. Bush listened to the briefing, Suskind says, then told the CIA briefer: "All right. You've covered your ass, now."

1. I believe it.
One doesn't have to believe in complex conspiracy theories such as controlled demolitions to recognize that the Bush administration allowed the attacks on 9/11 to happen either through gross malfeasance or something worse.

They had plenty of warning. Read Richard Clarke's book for starters. There's simply no excuse for their enabling the attacks to take place. They are either criminally negligent or they deliberately let it happen in order to have an excuse to suspend Constitutional rights and invade Iraq.

That ain't conspiracy theory. That's hard cold common sense analysis of the facts.

2. how does this stuff always seem to get (slightly more) press
after the election?

And frankly, although I am somewhere in the middle of the debate, things like this make me think there may have been more to the 9/11 story that they say.

4. question for you: Why was Osama never tried
like the PLO hijacker that took over the Achille Lauro and killed a US citizen. Abu Abbas
tried in Italy in absentia and sentenced to 5 life sentences. See snip. Of all the people
held at GITMO, only 10 have had a military trial. Why?

Achille Lauro hijacker dies in US custody
Abu Abbas, the Palestinian who led the 1985 hijacking of the Achille Lauro cruise ship in which a wheelchair-bound American hostage was killed, has died in US custody, a Pentagon spokesman said today.
He headed the Palestinian Liberation Front, which attacked the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro in 1985 and killed a wheelchair-bound American hostage, 69-year-old Leon Klinghoffer, throwing him into the Mediterranean.
Abbas was sentenced in absentia in Italy to five life terms for his role in the hijacking.

6. personally I think it was because
OBL was and is an asset for the CIA all along.

I think the administration is guilty as hell in several ways for 9/11.

7. I think that OBL was the strawman
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 04:14 PM by MissWaverly
he was a convenient bogeyman to wave at the American people, I have heard so many theories on
9-11 that my head spins. But this CYA remark by Bush which was also repeated in the Frontline
documentary indicates that Bush knew beforehand. Nobody says CYA unless they know something is
wrong and they are looking the avoid the repercussions of an event.

9. Condaleeza Rice admitted that bushco knew before hand.
She acknowledged, during the congressional investigation (such as it was) that the briefing said that the OBL planned to fly airplanes into buildings. FBI agents in several jurisdictions had reported to their superiors that middle eastern men were learning how to fly but didn't want to learn to take off or land. Richard Clarke and is entire team were warning C. Rice repeatedly - they were practically jumping up and down with anxiety, and these were career bureaucrats who were if anything Republican-leaning and very hard-nosed and not prone to anxiety - that OBL was going to attack us soon. They knew that the Cole attack was part of the same plan. Atta and the others involved in the attack were known by the CIA - they were being monitored. They could have been arrested at any moment. For some reason they were not. Why do we know everything they did in the weeks leading up to the attacks? Because our government was following them around.

For crying out loud, the World Trade Center had been attacked already in 1993. Newsweek magazine reported that OBL was "public enemy #1" in the summer of 2001.

The minute I learned about the attack on the twin towers, on the morning of 9/11, I knew it was probably OBL. My husband knew it. The talking heads on TV knew it.

It was not a surprise. Why didn't bushco stop it?

This is not conspiracy theory. This is an assessment of the facts. Wake up people.

3. Let's look at what this comment might mean
1. He was warned but knew something the staffer didn't know, thus making the comment to the CIA staffer?

2. He was just being condescending to the staffer, but doesn't' explain the comment?

3. He didn't know of the implications of the memo, but still didn't want to look stupid?

4. He just wanted to go fishing?

Ron Suskind is not a bubble doll journalist so I think the comment was true.

5. Frontline said last night on the Cheney episode
that George Tenet was the one who always delivered the "PDB" and it showed him with an attache
case.

LET'S NOT LET THIS THREAD DETERIORATE SO IT GET'S THROW IN THE BASEMENT.

I think this story is important news that hopefully can be discussed in GDP for a while.

11. I agree. There is no reason to go into bizarre theories.
Let's talk about the known, acknowledged facts. Let's talk about what the 9/11 commission themselves released. Let's talk about testimony of C. Rice and others.

There's no need to go off on a wild goose chase or anything else. Let's stick to the facts - that is all we need.

12. I am not sure what you are referring to by deteriorate
the only reason that I mentioned that is that if the PDB was always delivered by Tenet then
Bush was addressing a high level official when he made that comment not a gofer. I
never knew who delivered the PDB before.

13. I think that the poster was not referring to your post
DU generally keeps discussions of 9/11 that get into controlled demolition and other conspiracy theories in their own forum. I think that the poster was making a general statement, not in reference to your post but just a general statement, to keep this thread focused on known facts. Your post was fine, I thought.

16. well, I find this story unusual for 2 reasons
this event happened every day, so Bush was knew that his vacation was going to be interrupted,
and two the shelf life of this story is extremely long for this to have been a routine comment
that was made i.e. cya by following me around on my vacation like the ancient marinner.

22. My statement was for all posters here in GDP not address personally
I have written in the 9-11 forum and have read immensely on all sides of the issue.
I just didn't want this thread to be sent to the basement
because many readers of DU never go there.

The statement alone by the bushenfurher, if true, should be worrisome to even the average non informed American.

14. Tenet testified at the 9/11 hearings
that he did not go to Crawford and hadn't seen Bush in over a month prior to 9/11, so it was probably another CIA staffer who delivered the PDB when Smirk was too busy fucking off to do his job

18. Bush was in Texas, Tenet was in DC
this was already brought out in the 9/11 commission hearings...Tenet did not deliver this PDB, it was forwarded....(I believe Condi delivered it to him in Texas, since she was at the Ranch with him, at least that's how I understood it from the hearings)

19. True so I believe it was done by a CIA staffer for Tenet
Rice read the memo also but I believe as the story reported the comment by B*sh is not something he would have said to Condi but to an lower level staffer representing Tenet.

"Ass is covered" is an interesting term to be used by the pResident .....when you are talking about an attack on the United States.

24. Actually the way the book reads it was not at the 8/6 PDB briefing
Edited on Wed Jun-21-06 11:22 PM by RamboLiberal
But at another briefing at the ranch in August. Alarm bells were ringing at CIA HQ as they were picking up warnings of an upcoming attack. They were getting info from Arab country(s). The way Suskind explains it was that * was not a reader (as we all know). And he didn't base his knowledge on what he heard but more on the demeanor of the person who delivered the info. The CIA was flying briefers to Crawford to brief him on the alarming warnings. It was at one of these that * said "to a panicked CIA briefer. 'All right, you've covered your ass now.'

Further proof of either LIHOP or sheer damn incompetence when he went in to that classroom photo op then sat for those 5-7 minutes w/o reaction.

Another interesting * quote in the book. "I'm not going to be supportive of my father and all his Arab buddies," said to an unnamed old foreign policy hand.

Guess on the CYA quote Suskind would have to clarify exactly when said.
