Republicans suffer from a malignant nostalgia
For the "good" old days.

Remember when torture was just out in the open? All those great burnings at the stake and drawings and quarterings? Heads on pikes? Non of this namby-pamby lethal injection after a trial by your peers bullshit.

And how bout war before they cluttered it up with all that Geneva convention stuff?

And debtors prisons? They were cool.

Child labor was a great way to build character in little kids. Too bad our American kiddies can't have all the fun the little Indonesians do, making sneakers for pennies a day.

And labor laws just really screwed up companies for good. Safety? Lunch hours? Days off? Imagine the kind of executive pay we could have if we could just get rid of some of those ridiculous perks. They're just making our American workforce soft and uncompetitive. Need to throw off some of those pension plans while we're at it.

Stem cells? Don't even get me started. Leeches worked fine for hundreds of years.

with the addition of Gay's, liberals, evolutionists, peaceniks, and the like, as the new scourgees.

2. Good ol days - women barefoot and pregnant. No divorce, women not own
property, vote, had to have 5 LIVING children and husband's permission to have tubes tied. My sister - republican - wishes for the good ol days. She does not remember what it was ReALLY like.

Most people just want to be young again and confuse that with wanting the good ol days. If they could have the good ol days and be 65 years old - or have right now and be 20 years old - guess which one 99% of people would choose.

3. I just get so confused. It's like Leave it to Beaver Meets Torquemada
How do they reconcile this conflicting worldview?

I would love to have a fake bumper sticker for someone like Santorum that said something along the lines of: Santorum:Working Hard to Repeal the Enlightenment
