Hey Veterans, are you all fired up about the Flag Burning Amendment?
That embarrassment to Tennessee, bill frist wants to get the amendment debated in the senate between flag day and the Fourth of July to get veterans all excited and vote republican. Well it sure ain't working for me. Its just another republican sponsored waste of the senates time.

3. I hope Vets understand -
Edited on Thu Jun-15-06 01:44 PM by sparosnare
the flag means nothing if what it stands for isn't something to be proud of - if the country it represents is no longer an example for the rest of the world. If the government that hides behind it uses it's military to wage wars of aggression for the purpose of politics and profits.

Surely they, more than anyone, get that, and would want to burn the flag under such circumstances.

5. You know what just kills me BOSSHOG?
The Republicans are all fired up about "protecting" our flag, and yet they ignore the very real damage being done to our Constitution which they have taken an oath to defend.

Without the rights we are guaranteed by the Constitution, that flag will not stand for a damn thing.

7. And to compound their felony
they'll make sure someone else will do the protecting, just like they make sure someone else dies in Iraq. I got the flag and the constitution both on display in my office. If I have to evacuate again because of another damn hurricane, the constitution always goes with me. I got a nice hardbound addition from Barnes and Noble. It includes, the constitution, the declaration of independence and the articles of confederation. Very nice. Something "conservatives" have no need for.

6. Flag day honored here
by a parachutist with flag hanging down-flag hit the ground first-flag dragged across the ground while the jumper gained his balance-grade school kids singing away.

I was invited to leave the VFW during the Vietnam war when I suggested to all the flag wavers; "Lay down your flags pick up a weapon go to Vietnam and give the military a hand."

Give it a rest ye false patriots. Join up or shut up.

24. Here the late spring
is being nice to us. Being close to Lake Erie our spring is delayed our summers extended--great for concord grapes so we can make more wine-hiccup!

I will be seventy-two on the first day of summer. Time weighs heavy on me now BOSSHOG.

But I still remember the flag (s) flying from the mast head or the stern as required by underway or anchored up while crossing the Pacific and the Atlantic and the total length of the Med.

Flag had meaning then flying proud red white and blue against a blue sky.

Now it decorates pizza boxes etc. and on one occasion the lining of 'Bush the First Asshole's' suit coat.

I have a forty-eight star flag that was flown on a ship in the Pacific. It is stored safe and at the proper time I will fly it again.

10. I would be even more impressed,
if Bill Frist stood up for veterans by increasing the budget for the VA, instead of cutting it. By going after the jackoff, who allowed the information of Veterans to be stolen. And finally calling for the end of this unwinnable war, and telling the President to uphold the constitution. as it is written now!

11. An ex-Marine neighbor of mine had what I called a tribute to
the Iraq War when it started. He had yellow ribbons, put up a flag pole with the American flag and Marine flag, cross with a battle helmet, had USA stickers all over his trucks.

Every time I passed by his house, I'd roll my eyes, assuming he was just another flag waving sheep.

I now believe I was dead wrong.

Gone are the American flag and USA stickers. What has stayed is the cross with the helmet and the Marine flag. I think the guy is pissed. And I highly doubt he would support the flag burning amendment.

P.S. My ex-Marine husband was pissed WAY before the war, and he agrees that he fought for the right to burn the flag, even though the idea of someone doing it makes him angry.

12. I spent a lot of time in the military - both active and reserve duty
long enough to be given a retired ID card.

I think I can safely say that none of the time was spent protecting and defending the "flag".

It had more to do with defending the country and its citizens - not a piece of cloth.

(Sure - I admit to getting a tear ocassionally when I hear the National Anthem.)

One of my BIGGEST pet peaves is Veteran's Day. I have yet to get Veteran's Day off. Postal employees, city employees, bank employees - they all get the day off. It is insane.

A flag amendment to protect a piece of cloth as they rob us blind of our constitutional rights.

bizarro-world

13. We don't have Maoists now, we have Jingoists
The fuckers that try to palm this shit off on Americans are never veterans. Oh, there's a lot of wanna-be veterans, guys who loved Rambo and Top Gun but who could never find the time or inclination to raise that right hand and say: "I, state your name, do solemly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

Because if any of the "too busy to serve" bastards had, they'd know we didn't serve to protect the damned flag.

14. Thank you my friend
During the past three and a half years I've had several chats with 20-somethings "conservative" lads who have been all gungho for the war in Iraq. When asked by me, a combat zone veteran, to tell me about their military experiences three of them answered (on separate occasions) that they have not served in the military "yet." They do not know the servicemembers oath of enlistment but they do know what talking point to spew when chatting with a liberal veteran. And the thought of a liberal veteran fucks their mind up worse then meth. They are garbage and they have no concept of constitutional liberties or the costs to maintain.

You may be interested in a website where you can get the oath of enlistment on a coin. I got them for my Sailors and I got one for myself. Very nice.

Good one! And those are probably the same creeps flying a dirty, tattered made-in-China Stars & Stripes from the window of their SUV.

Any non-military vehicle flying a flag better have a high-ranking official inside.

27. Unfortunately, a LOT of veterans are pushing for it.

Every year I winced when renewing my Sons of the American Legion membership because of the Legion's backing of this amendment. Didn't care much for the "For God" part either, but I always lined that out of the "oath" before signing the card.

After Dad died a couple years ago, I decided to let my membership expire. And solely for this reason.

16. This amendment just floors me. They seem to not realize that
under the rules of the flag, burning is one of the approved and honorable ways to destroy an old flag that needs to be retired. If they were so concerned about honoring the flag the would acquaint themselves with the flag code and follow those rules. They prefer to cherry pick their rules the same as Bush cherry picked intelligence.

25. They need to get that anti-flag-burning amendment in place pronto!!
There are so many flag-burnings going on, I can hardly get to work through all the flag smoke. There's a goddamn flag-burner on every freakin' corner. This is going to lead to a huge flag shortage if they don't get it stopped, not to mention the increase in greenhouse gasses!

Yeah, it's a stupid waste of time, a wedge issue and the only reason politicians enact laws like this is so they jump up & down and shout about how well their new law stopped shit from happening that wasn't happening in the first fucking place.

When exactly was the last US flag burned on US soil? It doesn't matter; as I recall that oath is about defending and honoring the Constitution, not the Flag.

You know if they want to pass a law to protect and honor the flag, how about mandating that every flag sold in the United States be MADE in the United States?
