Jeb Bush: Davis "stupid" to send political e-mail as Alberto neared
Bush: Davis "stupid" to send political e-mail as Alberto neared

BRENDAN FARRINGTON
June 14, 2006

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - A campaign e-mail sent out by U.S. Rep. Jim Davis the day before Tropical Storm Alberto came ashore in Florida was a "stupid" attempt to politicize the storm, Gov. Jeb Bush said Wednesday.

Davis sent an e-mail to supporters with the subject line "Alberto is here. Are we ready?" It criticized how Republicans have handled rising insurance rates and spoke of his own ideas on the subject as he seeks the Democratic nomination for governor.
"It's time to make a change. It's time for a governor who will use the resources and authority of the state's highest office to be an advocate for policyholders and make sure their rights are protected," Davis said in the e-mail.

Bush, who can't seek re-election because of term limits, said it was inappropriate to send the e-mail when a large part of the state's gulf coast was under a hurricane watch.
"I hope candidate Davis, if he was to be privileged to serve in the job that I have, I hope he would realize what a stupid statement that is."

Bush later added, "His ambitions seems to get in the way of common sense on a regular basis."

The Davis campaign said Bush's criticism is simply a sign that Davis is the front-runner in the Democratic primary.
"He's getting traction because he's talking about the issues that directly affect Floridians like hurricane insurance rates," said Davis spokeswoman Danae Jones. "He wasn't politicizing it. It's not a fundraising e-mail, he's not bashing anybody, he's talking about real issues and real ideas about how we can help."

It's the second time this month Bush has slammed Davis.

Yeah, Jeb will be *just the ticket* to smooth out John McCain's prickly nature. Sure.

1. What I admire most about the Bush family is their subtle tact
Notice they're ability to deal with powerful people who may disagree with them. Yes, "stupid"
works for me as a diplomatic term.

4. Yeah! When a hurricane comes, it's time to get prepared.
Jeb! said: "The day before a hurricane arrives on our shores is not the time to be talking about politics, it's the time to get prepared."

7. Max Cleland returns fire:

August 26, 2004 Former Georgia Senator and triple amputee Max Cleland was turned away when he tried to deliver a letter calling on President Bush to condemn TV ads attacking fellow Vietnam veteran John Kerry’s military service.

Cleland draws gasps

By Bill Cotterell
June 18, 2006

Former U.S. Sen. Max Cleland gave Leon County Democrats what they wanted - blistering attacks on President Bush and congressional Republicans - at the local party's first annual fundraising dinner.

But a couple of one-liners in his warm-up routine drew some startled looks and gasps, before the loud laughter and applause.

First, the Georgia Democrat referred to Gov. Jeb Bush's criticism of U.S. Rep. Jim Davis last week for sending out an e-mail about insurance while the state was preparing for Tropical Storm Alberto. Bush said it was "stupid" to talk of politics at a time like that.

"For any of the Bush brothers to call a Democrat stupid is like a frog calling somebody ugly," Cleland said. Local Democrats have called the governor lots of things over the years, but not dumb.

(emphasis added)

Leon County Democratic Party Chairman Rick Minor said Saturday the evening was a big success, with a sellout crowd of 160 at the Silver Slipper. He estimated that the party would net $8,000 to $10,000 to boost Democratic candidates in the coming campaigns.

Before the event, Minor had been hoping to clear $5,000.

We love you, Max Cleland.
