HELENA — Gov. Brian Schweitzer is spending this week visiting Montana troops serving in Iraq, Kuwait and Afghanistan.
"Their spirits are great. They're phenomenal. I'd tell you if they weren't," the governor said in a telephone interview from Kuwait on Wednesday.
Schweitzer left Montana this past Sunday for the publicly unannounced visit to Iraq, along with Gov. Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Gov. Matt Blunt of Missouri. The three had breakfast with U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and military leaders Monday morning before leaving for Kuwait and then Iraq.
The governors' trip was arranged by Rumsfeld's office and paid for by the federal government, said Sarah Elliott, Schweitzer's spokeswoman.
