Brian Ross: World News Tonight to cover NSA/reporter eavesdropping
Edited on Mon May-15-06 04:48 PM by seafan
Will be on tonight's ABC World News Tonight, Monday, May 15, 2006.

Ross was on Ed Schultz's show an hour ago.

Here is the gist of what he said to Ed:

He thinks a tipping point has been reached with this warrantless NSA snooping. He says he is getting feedback from people *on the inside*, and they are very angry about what is happening.

Ed asked him, "Do you think more people are coming forward with information of what is happening----" "YES!!" was the rapid reply, even before Ed finished asking the question. "This MUST get out."

Ross said that listeners and readers NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON. He said, "We are not reporting on troop movements or security planning, so it is not true that we are endangering nat'l security."

Ross said all of this is stemming from the CIA leak investigation of the newspapers reporting on the secret CIA prisons in Romania and Poland. It was reported that these 2 prisons were abruptly shut down and all operations reopened in a third secret location.

Ross said that another reason the CIA (Goss, et. al.) were angry over these leaks is that the papers also reported the U. S. military's use of the Predator missile inside Pakistan.

Ed asked if these revelations would intimidate sources into silence. Ross said they were all aware of how they should be careful of how they communicate, and that they work around it. So, the answer seems to be NO.

Ross said he was working on this story for ABC World News Tonight. He said it will also be on the ABC website.

(all the above is paraphrased..)

7. Yes:except there are no "little people". We all count. But one other thing
I think, beside them getting snooped on, two other factors are in play here. First, there's Colbert. As much as the press marginalized him, they also recognize that he struck a chord with everyone who saw his performance. He spanked them just as hard as he did the president. They're seeing now that they are seen as lap puppies. He wounded they're egos and they are needing to reestablish their credentials as genuinely independent.

But the whole reason Colbert resonated with the public is becuase those of us in the opposition have been as vocal as we've been. The more we raise a stink, the more Colberts there will be to speak truth to power. We're making a difference on DU and at other opposition activities because we're keeping dissent alive in an age of power abuse. We are part of the solution, even when it feels sometimes like there is no solution.

9. I appreciate your optimism. But I'm old and curmudgeonly and cynical as
hell.

I see it simply as being only because its about them.

I also appreciate your notion about little people. And I would like to agree with you, but my cynicism gets in the way again. We are, in fact, little people.
