Conservative Christians Criticize Republicans

By DAVID D. KIRKPATRICK
Published: May 15, 2006

WASHINGTON, May 13 — Some of President Bush's most influential conservative Christian allies are becoming openly critical of the White House and Republicans in Congress, warning that they will withhold their support in the midterm elections unless Congress does more to oppose same-sex marriage, obscenity and abortion.

"There is a growing feeling among conservatives that the only way to cure the problem is for Republicans to lose the Congressional elections this fall," said Richard Viguerie, a conservative direct-mail pioneer.

Mr. Viguerie also cited dissatisfaction with government spending, the war in Iraq and the immigration-policy debate, which Mr. Bush is scheduled to address in a televised speech on Monday night. "I can't tell you how much anger there is at the Republican leadership," Mr. Viguerie said. "I have never seen anything like it."

In the last several weeks, Dr. James C. Dobson, founder of Focus on the Family and one of the most influential Christian conservatives, has publicly accused Republican leaders of betraying the social conservatives who helped elect them in 2004. He has also warned in private meetings with about a dozen of the top Republicans in Washington that he may turn critic this fall unless the party delivers on conservative goals.

James C. Dobson and many of his allies say they are deeply disappointed in President Bush and Congressional Republicans.

1. Because you were used and tossed aside, just like a tissue a gay guy
like myself uses to clean up with after spending time with "obscenity". Look on the bright side Big Daddy, while you were fleecing the flock, the GOP was fleecing you - and as you get tossed aside like a used cum rag, remember, that it didn't lead to one more abortion. There's your silver lining.

2. I don't feel sorry for Dobson and the other far-right nutcases who
slavishly worked to get Dubya elected and stood silentlyl by and the Constitution was being shredded.

Some of them are only now coming to the realization that the Bush administration is by no means a "Christian" enterprise, in any stretch of that term, and they're growing uneasy about members of a second-term failed administration carrying out their hate agenda.

Boo hoo hoo.

3. Our Country is Economically falling apart

and the Fundy Republicans are worried about Gay Marriage, Family Planning and the frequency of SWEARING out in the Cornfields of Nebraska. :puke:

Methinks these wedge issues will fall on deaf ears as our economy continues to tank. It's a sad way to wake-up the Corporate News Fed American, but perhaps the only way. When people are worried how to provide the next meal for their family or meeting the mortgage, they won't give a SHIT about these PERSONAL and FAMILY oriented issues.

9. Your comment reminded me of a Jim Morrison lyric...
...from "When The Music's Over"...

We want the world and we want it...NOW.

I think that's "how much more they want"...ALL of it.

The Evangelical agenda calls for a "world vision," a detailed schematic outlining what EVERY man, woman and child WILL and WILL NOT do.

You WILL read THIS book. You WILL NOT read THAT one. You MAY see THIS movie. You MAY NOT see that one.

EXCUSE me???

I'm a Christian...I've stated that many times on DU...but I'm not a "Conservative Christian" or "Evangelical." I do what I do and respect the right of those around me to do what they want to do. As long as no one poses an immediate threat to me or the people I love, what right do I have to "instruct" them on how to love their lives?

:patriot:

10. you and me both.
and the morrison lyric is very apt in these circumstances.

well, god willing, may they -- in their insanity -- remain feeling slighted in the fall of 06 -- and may we feel invigorated and revived for 06 and 08.

5. Dobson et al
These creeps have been around for years, It's about time for them to fade into the rocks and crevices they came from. As far as them not getting what they wanted, they are beginning to understand that the bush machine has no more morals then they themselves do.

6. These fundie whack-jobs do this every time
I don't remember a midterm election where the nut-jobs don't come out of the woodwork, whine about "their priorities" and threaten to take their ball and go home.

We're fucking up in the Middle East, killing thousands of people, fuelling rage against us around the world and the best these pricks can come up with is the "gay marriage amendment"? Fucking assholes, all of them.

8. Shorter Dobson: Pander to us again! I need the money
But my goodness! They're all so angry and identify themselves as such. I wonder if George and George and Chris and Tim and Cokie and Wolf and all the rest of them will tut-tut about how angry Dobson and his cohort are, and how they wish, they wish, the repressive right wasn't so angry.

Of course, if that happens, somebody warn me so I can stand up to accommodate the monkeys that will be flying out of my butt.

11. Right, they're going to vote for Hillary instead?
Okay, so we all know Hillary seems to think so given the way she's kissing up to them, but most sane people don't really see that happening.

The urge to destroy what one has in the interests of a dreamed of perfection is not confined solely to the left, fortunately....
