Is Gore popular in Tennessee?
In reading boards and articles that want to "draft Gore", I have wondered about this topic. With all of the hoopla about Florida, some forget that if Gore had only have won his home state that he would have been Prez. I remember reading a quote from Gore in 2001, that he planned to go back to Tennessee to "rebuild some bridges". Has that happened? I would love to see a Tennessee poll on Gore. Not asking people about 2008 necessarily. Would like to see this question asked. "Is your opinion of Al Gore generally favorable or unfavorable?".

1. At this point, I think anyone would be more popular that what we
have to deal with now. But since Gore hasn't been running for anything, I don't know that you'd find any polls speaking to his popularity one way or the other.

3. I guess my point is that
before he would (or should) consider running, he should feel confident that he could win Tennessee. That's why I'd like to see a poll done now (or soon) about his popularity in Tennessee. Maybe this all begs the question, can you win the Presidency without carrying your home state? Has it been done before?

5. There were 2 repub senators and a repub gov. in TN in 2000
and Gore didn't campaign a ton there either.

I agree that the homestate really matters alot. Any state we can turn our way can make a big difference. That is one of the reasons I hope that BOTH our Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates come from winable red states.

As for winning the election without winning your homestate, it hasn't been done in a few decades. In 1968, Nixon lost his homestate to Humphrey and still won the election. But Humphrey won his homestate, and even Wallace won his homestate as a 3rd party candidate. In the last 40 years or so, presidential candidates have won their hometstate about 85% of the time, even if they lose the general election. Big electoral losers like Mondale, Dukakis, Dole, Ford, etc still won their homestates.

Alas, the homestate is worth considering when we nominate our candidate in 08.

Then you pretty much know you're in deep doo-doo.

9. Not if you dem in a red state or a repub in a blue state.
Don't you think Mitt Romney would campaign pretty hard in MA? Guiliani in NY? Warner in VA?

6. He is with everyone I know.
I used to attend the small town meetings he would have when he was senator and became a fan then. I went to Vanderbilt to hear him talk about global warming a few months ago and hundreds of people were turned away. The line wrapped around blocks waiting to get in. I literally was the last person allowed through the door. He could win Tennessee now.

10. But little george lost his home country in 2000!!
Does that count?
Gore won the popular vote and thus carried his home country as well as Florida.

12. During the 2000 election,
several members of a chat group (who happened to be residents of Tenn.) gave a huge thumb's down to Gore. They felt there were two Gores - one who tried to look like one of the commoners and the other, a rich, spoiled brat. I could never see it, but it sure showed up in the voting numbers. That was my only reference to how popular he was.
