Don't fear "the Jackal": The growing paranoia of Dick Cheney
Purdum reports that Cheney travels with a chemical-biological suit at all times. When he gave his friend Robin West and his twin children a ride to the White House a couple of years ago, West commented on the fact that Cheney’s motorcade varied its daily path. “And he said, ‘Yeah, we take different routes so that “The Jackal” can’t get me,’” West tells Purdum. “And then there was this big duffel bag in the middle of the backseat, and I said, ‘What’s that? It’s not very roomy in here.’ And said, ‘No, because it’s a chemical-biological suit,’ and he looked at it and said, ‘Robin, there’s only one. You lose.’”

This is scary stuff, indeed. For those of you under 40ish, "The Day of the Jackal" was a Frederick Forsyth thriller, made into a 1973 movie, that follows an assassin's attempt to kill Charles DeGaulle (Spoiler alert: He misses...duh). For some men, four heart attacks might trigger a kind of fatalism, but the Cheney effect seems to be the reverse, an over-the-top survivalist instinct -- no doubt worsened by his many months brooding in "undisclosed locations" -- and the growing belief that people are out to get him on every street corner.

2. I heard a short report on him last night--He is growing more exclusive-eve
n though he does make appearances and speeches on a regualar basis.

He is the second in command of the red phone--that is scary!

3. IMHO Dickie is NOT paranoid
I think he can read his poll numbers and knows of all the people he has crushed to get where he is today.

As for the changing of routes, that is the first rule any security person will tell people.

4. John Perkins references the Jackal in his book
Confessions of an Economic Hitman. IIRC he says something to the effect that when EHM's fail in their tasks then a/the Jackal is called in.

7. And then having a heart attack just before.......
he can finish putting it on, he slumps over and dies in the back seat with this blank stare on his face. Sounds like a movie of the week scenario to me. ;)

10. He'd probably have a heart attack trying to do it.
I really miss the website... www.isdickcheneydeadyet.com
There were some amusing updates back when we could go a few months without seeing Cheney. The days when he could have been dead for all we knew.

8. If only SNL hadn't lost its guts, this would make such a great skit!
Cheney in one of those extra-armored limos, w/ a friend's family. Some warning signal goes off, or comes in - whatever. The car, taking a tortuous diversionary route through some drug-dealing neighborhood, screeches to a halt and the Secret Service throw open the doors and toss out Cheney's guests. Then they cram Cheney into some bizarre biohazmat outfit. And then the alarm turns out to be in response to some innocuous, harmless thing. Ends with an Emily Litella, oh-never-mind moment.

In reality, what does it profit a man to have all those Haliburton dollars, when he goes through life in a paranoid haze? If he keeps that suit in the car, you know there are many other suits everywhere he is - like in the bedroom, any airplane he travels in, etc. Does he have one for his wife, too? What if his grandchildren were visiting and an alarm sounded? Does he say, too bad, you lose, as he puts it on? You betcha!

18. I wasn't aware
He HAD a conscience - but I do agree with you...when a person does the hideous things this man has done - paranoia is a real reaction.

Sucks to be him.....but he did it to himself.

15. When you have dedicated your life...
to backstabbing, screwing, cheating and stealing, this is how you end up. You have no friends, you can trust nobody, and you live with paranoia every second of your existence. SUCK ON IT DICKY BOY!
