In the midst of the 'shake-up', the real threat to democracy lives on
in the REDISTRICTING morass. Juliet Eilperin at Slate sees to the heart of this insidious, omnipresent issue that, in my opinion (as a Texan who was affected directly), has the potential to undermine the pillars of our system of one-person-one-vote. When it is combined with the devastating effects of campaign contributions...well, I shudder.

"As a mapmaker, I can have more of an impact on an election than a campaign, than a candidate," says Republican consultant David Winston, who drew House seats for the GOP after the 1990 U.S. Census. "When I, as a mapmaker, have more of an impact on an election than the voters, the system in out of whack."

Eilperin gives a pretty concise evaluation of some possible remedies.
A must read.
