RWer says Abramoff donated to all but two congressional Dems - Help?
So this one Repub I debated earlier today showed me this list of Democrats he said received money from Abramoff. The list happened to be from Free Republic (surprise). He claimed the FEC as his source.

I thought he never donated to any Democrats, but his clients did.

Clear this up for me, will ya?

1. Abramoff gave NO money to any Democrat -not one thin dime.
Why would he? He's a Republican lobbyist.
Period. End of story.

10. You don't have to prove a negative.
If the RW idiot can't come up with proof, he's lying. Actually, if a Republicon's lips are moving, he's lying. Relax.

5. You Have The Right Of It, Sir
The list you have been given is of people who received donations from groups that at some time or other hired Abramof, and in many cases, includes donations made prior to their hiring him.

6. according to opensecrets.org
Unlike Abramoff himself, who along with his wife contributed $225,000 of their personal money to Republicans only, his clients were less partisan in their political contributions. While some gave almost exclusively to one party, on average they gave about 60 percent of their money to Republicans and the remainder to Democrats.

His Lobby co. however did make contributions, however. See, how the punks manipulate facts? Dems always got money from Indians( Abranoff's clients), but get less since he came around.

11. He is lying
Abramoff gave no money to Democrats directly. Zip, zilch, nada. Not one cent.

Abramoff gave no lavish dinners, golfing vacations, or even the time of day to any Democrat. Zip, zilch, nada.

Some of Abramoffs CLIENTS hedged their bets by donating to both Repugs and Democrats. However, generally speaking, once they'd turned their affairs over to Abramoff, the donations to Democrats dried up.

So your friend is a big fat fool for believing what he hears from right wing hate radio and Pox News.

17. One of the arguments that I've heard is that...
While Abramoff didn't donate to Democrats, other members of his lobbying firm Preston Gates & Ellis and Greenberg Traurig did. If the "culture of corruption" exists in the republican party, why is it unreasonable to believe that it also existed within this lobbying from and that similarly nefarious donations came from others in this lobbying firm to democrats?

While I don't think it is unreasonable to believe that this is possible, as far as I can tell, no other person in the firm has been indicted or is even being investigated for similar donations to democrats.

20. If there were illegal contributions to Democrats
from that firm - it would already be known. There would be investigations - they have many committees that could do it - in the House and Senate - and they would have supoena power. Imagine if (any high profile Democrat of your choosing) had accepted bribes and did favors - how quikly would the Republicans in power want to see him/her in handcuffs being led to a police car.

Jack Abramoff Lobbying and Political Contributions, 1999 - 2006*

Former Washington lobbyist Jack Abramoff used to be the toast of Washington. Now he has plead guilty to fraud, public corruption and tax evasion in connection with dealings related to his American Indian clients, of whom he and former associate Michael Scanlon are accused of defrauding millions in fees. Scanlon was charged in November by the Justice Department with conspiracy to corrupt a U.S. lawmaker and is now cooperating with federal investigators. Abramoff, in exchange for his plea, could face up to ten years in prison while also setting the stage for investigators to use him as a witness against his former colleagues and political allies.

Many in Washington have turned on Abramoff, who used his connections to influence legislation by enticing lawmakers with golf trips, sporting events or fancy meals at his Washington restaurant. Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, who once described Abramoff as a friend, now denies having been tied to him.

But Abramoff's troubles don't just end with the tribes. He has also agreed to plead guilty to fraud and conspiracy charges in connection with his 2000 purchase of SunCruz Casinos, a casino boat company that he had formerly represented. Adam Kidan, a SunCruz business partner, was also indicted. Kidan agreed in December to plead guilty.

Here is a detailed look at Abramoff's lobbying, and political contributions from Abramoff, the tribes that hired him, and SunCruz Casinos, since 1999.

1/12/06 UPDATE: In our efforts to refine this list, we have further researched lobbying data and removed contributions from Indian tribes made before Mr. Abramoff's registration as a lobbyist for the contributor. Contributions made during the 2004 cycle but received after Abramoff ended his affiliation with a contributor remain on the list. Also, this list now includes contributions made by Michael Scanlon, an Abramoff associate who has also pleaded guilty to federal crimes. For more information about this data, our methodology and this refinement, see the answers to frequently asked questions.
