WASHINGTON -- Most Americans know one thing about Governor Mike Huckabee of Arkansas, if they know anything: He lost more than 100 pounds in a year, a triumph touted in a weight-loss book he has hawked around the country.

But evangelical conservative activists know one or two other things that make the governor a standout among Republicans who may run for president in 2008: Huckabee is a Baptist minister and a fierce defender of traditional family values.

The Iowa Christian Alliance has invited potential Republican candidates to address voters around the state. Antiabortion activists have scoured the records of potential contenders. A coalition of national conservative groups has summoned potential candidates to a conference in September where 2,000 or more activists it calls ''values voters" are expected to attend.

Governor Mitt Romney of Massachusetts has disavowed past statements supporting abortion rights. Senator George Allen, Republican of Virginia, dropped his support for allowing gays to be covered by federal hate-crimes legislation. Rudolph W. Giuliani, the former New York mayor who is considered to be a liberal on social issues, spoke recently at a meeting of evangelical leaders in the South.

Brownback is a strange, strange man. more conservative and religious than even Santorum, but able to get along with other human beings.

plus, Huckabee's band (yes, he has one) has played at Freeper inaguration balls. no one who's ever played the Holiday Inn should ever be president.

5. Huckabee's their guy

He's big-time into religious right issues. Has had an anti-abortion PAC for ages.

For those who consider electability, he's got the "aw shucks" Southern Democrat shtick down pat. And for those on the right who are convinced Hillary Clinton will be our nominee, I think they like the idea of taking Arkansas out from under her. Which Huckabee could probably manage. Wes Clark could give him a run for him money tho.

I wouldn't write off Brownback, but he's not as personable and he's a Catholic. Might end up Huckabee's VP nominee. Now there's a scary thought, as if either one weren't bad enough. :puke:

Huckabee is every bit as evil as Bush, but a lot smarter.

Juliani may stuggle with them, but they will whip him into shape. They need that 30% of the electorate to win. They'll trot out some "ate the gays" legislation to get them all fired up.

will be the candidate that the Christian right likes in the primaries, at least here in Virginia, Pst Robertson and Jerry Falwell both have praised him. Giulani and McCain though I don't think will be it even though the latter McCain can be considered conservative on social issues. I don't see it being Hagel either because he's not in line with their foreign policy views.

21. I saw an interesting TV interview w/Pat Robertson...........

perhaps a year ago. It was on a major network (CNN maybe?). He was asked about 2008 and specific candidates. He praised several of the usual suspects (Brownback, Frist, Santorum, Allen). He was then asked about Guliani, and to my surprise he made some supportive statements about him. He was then asked about McCain, and that grin left his face. He said he would never, ever support McCain and would do anything in his power to prevent him from being nominated. I found this curious as I consider McCain to be to the right of Guliani.

I know Robertson is a complete moron, but I found it interesting because of what the Religious Right did to McCain in 2000. Robertson's comments and tone lead me to believe that the Religious Right will go after McCain again. I'm not sure I completely understand their contempt for McCain. The only thing I can think of is he has refused to suck up to this crowd.

The points against each of Republicans in the last paragraph of the OP should be played up by the Dems.
