Cali Governor Tossup(Rasmussen)
March 23, 2006--Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is neck and neck with each of the two most viable candidates seeking the Democratic nomination.

The latest Rasmussen Reports election poll in California shows Schwarzenegger trailing State Treasurer Phil Angelides by one percentage point, 45% to 44%. That is the same nominal edge Angelides enjoyed in our February poll, when he led 41% to 40%.

State Comptroller Steve Westly leads 45% to 44%. In our last poll, Schwarzenegger led Westly 39% to 34%.

Westly is a well-funded candidate who has plowed millions of his own money into the campaign. But he has been slammed by the Angelides campaign for cheerfully teaming up with Schwarzenegger in 2004 to promote debt-restructuring ballot initiatives.

The fact that both Democrats poll essentially the same numbers at this time suggests the race remains a referendum on the incumbent rather than a choice between competing candidates.

1. I'll add that Arnie is usually in the bottom 5 in gubernatorial approval
ratings. Surveyusa.com has the details.

Incumbents are hard to beat, but I think we can do it if we work hard.

2. Westly is "controller," not "comptroller."
I know, I'm being a nit pick...

6. More nit pik - he is still a state comptroller
What is the difference between a State Controller and a State Comptroller?

Nothing. Both are usually elected positions with wide-ranging fiscal responsibilities. The word controller comes from the Latin words meaning “against” and “rolls”; to be a controller initially meant to check figures against an entity’s financial rolls, or logs. The word comptroller is derived from the Latin verb meaning “to compute,” a result of mistaken prefixes by the British in the 15th century. Essentially, the two words are two different ways of saying the same thing, but the state chose to title the office 'California State Controller'.

Now, if I can only figure the difference between flammable and inflammable for the ensuing flame war. ;)

4. Arnold has been moving to the left recently
He hired one of Gray Davis's former staff members. He's just doing this because he needs to gain back some of the Democrats that voted for him in the recall. Although....he will lose the support of some Republicans if he does this to much.

5. I noticed this also.
I thought the same thing. He won't get my vote. I'm leaning towards Westly.

8. How can CA elect a Repub two cylcles in a row?
This makes me very sad, and pessimistic about ever regaining Congress.

9. If Californians "re-elect" Schwarzenegger....
I give up. That's it. I call it quits and live the rest of my life hiding under my bed.
