okay, edited to add: This is a list of stuff that the neo-cons have tried to make political hay out of . . . including bachelorette, e.g., idiot Dan Quayle said that TV star (blank) shouldn't portray a single mom in her TV show, that she was a happy single mom, instead she should be embarrassed at such a dysfunctional child-rearing portrayal.

"Murphy Brown, a character who supposedly epitomizes today's intelligent, highly paid professional woman, mocked the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another lifestyle choice." -- Dan Quayle

13. somebody should have reminded that idiot that it was a work of FICTION
and, had he actually watched the program, he would have learned that the MAN had, upon learning Murphy was pregnant, RAN away. so, it wasn't exactly her "lifestyle choice" and she never used that phrase anyway.

so, she should have had an abortion? or just gotten married to anybody, right?

Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 03:02 PM by underpants
You are right about how bachelorette used to be "old maid" or "spinster" --they needed another word and it has become a part of the American lexicon

Is "old maid" really a name for the unpopped popcorn?

15. Yes, the unpopped kernels at the bottom of the bowl
It doesn't refer to popcorn fresh in the bag before you've cooked them,
but the kernels that didn't pop when cooked.

http://www.popcorn.org/encyclopedia/popcorn_tips/epoldtip.cfm

Encyclopedia Popcornica: Saving "Old Maids"

"Old Maids" is a term for kernels that fail to pop and are often found at the bottom of the popcorn bowl. They can, however, be rejuvenated. The water in kernels is what causes popcorn to pop, so all you need to do is re-hydrate the dried kernels.

David Woodside, author of What Makes Popcorn Pop? suggests filling "a one-quart jar three-quarters full of popcorn and adding one tablespoon of water. Cover the jar with an airtight lid and give it a few good shakes every few minutes until the popcorn has absorbed all the water. Store the jar in a cool place."

Woodside says in two or three days you can test-pop a batch of kernels. If you still get old maids, add a few more drops of water to the jar, shake it, and let it sit for a few more days.
