A 12-Step Program for Destroying a Nation ...
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 12:51 AM by NanceGreggs
(1) Steal an election and install an Idiot in the White House. Fill his advisory staff with Neo-Cons intent on destroying the world as we know it.

(2) Make sure the Congress & Senate are under the control of a party that advocates pre-emptive war, torture, deficit spending -- and don't forget to make sure they're all beholding to Big Oil, Big Business and Big Pharma.

(3) Create policies that encourage the out-sourcing of American jobs to overseas labour markets. Crush unions, ignore the poor, encourage business owners to hire illegal aliens who will work under inhumane conditions for the lowest wages imaginable.

(4) Steal yet ANOTHER election, achievable by advocating the use of voting machines that are easily hacked. Give tax cuts to the wealthy, over-tax the middle-class, make health care insurance as unaffordable as possible.

(5) Destroy the concept of separation of church and state, and appeal to the fears of Christian fundamentalists by convincing them that part of the 'liberal agenda' is to turn all of their children into homosexuals who want drive-through abortion clinics in every town and city.

(6) Cut funding to education; delete science from school curriculums and replace it with theories like creationism. Hey, and don't forget to raise interest on student loans.

(7) Ignore environmental concerns completely, especially global warming. Sell off national forests to lumber companies, pollute water sources, encourage the hunting and/or killing of endangered species. Refer to things like acid rain as "tree-huggin' hippie crap".

(8) Disregard really depressing things like homelessness, mal-nourished children, millions of people falling below the poverty line, and rampant unemployment. Voters HATE hearing about depressing things.

(9) In the aftermath of lying the nation into an unwinnable war, support the troops by cutting veterans' benefits, and by all means don't pass any legislation that would keep the crazies from disrupting the funerals of those who have died in service to their country.

(10) Appoint totally incompetent people to head up governmental departments where life-and-death decisions have to be made. If one of the country's major cities should be hit by natural disaster, make sure those 'in charge' have a birthday party, a shoe-shopping expedition, or a sports event to attend.

(11) Suppress free speech, feed the mainstream media daily doses of propaganda, take bribes where you can get them, spy on American citizens at every opportunity, and question the patriotism of anyone who catches you breaking the law.

(12) Never forget the Golden Rule: If your poll numbers start plumetting, SCARE the populace with warnings of an imminent terrorist attack. It's guaranteed to work EVERY time!

Now, if THAT doesn't get it, it ain't in town.

6. Steal away!
If you post this elsewhere on the internet(z), I would appreciate recognition of authorship (as well as an attribution to having seen it on Democratic Underground, which can use all the publicity it can get!).

But please feel free to pass it along -- we DUers have a lot to say, and the more people who hear it (or read it), the better!

4. Succinct, but I think we can add more...
like... (13) Stack the Judicial Branch with pandering political appointees eager to remove pesky restraints on Executive Branch power and return America to its roots...a monarchy.

9. Thanks for your encouragement!
As soon as my in-house IT Director gets up tomorrow morning (aka my husband), I'll get him to figure out the blog/journal thing for me.

When it comes to politics, I have a BIG MOUTH. (But when it comes to computer know-how, I am HOPELESS!)

13. My world would not function ...
... without my in-house, computer-savvy husband. How many times have I gotten him out of bed in the middle of the night to ask: "Okay, now what the %$@)) does THIS icon mean?"

And my world would not be complete without people like my BabylonSister, who make my forays into the late-night discussion threads thought-provoking, entertaining, and comforting when it's needed most!

21. Excellent list
I got a chuckle out of this:

(5) Destroy the concept of separation of church and state, and appeal to the fears of Christian fundamentalists by convincing them that part of the 'liberal agenda' is to turn all of their children into homosexuals who want drive-through abortion clinics in every town and city.

For why would homosexuals need drive-through abortion clinics? They are not going to fall prey to any unwanted pregnancies after all. (Of course that logic wouldn't stop the fundies from falling for this line if they were fed it by the government or any of their wingnut organizations. )

25. Loot the Treasury, Commit Waste of the country's resources.
To Commit Waste: the tenant sells off the resources of the landlord's estate.

Bush is the tenant, we are the landlords.

28. When I was in HS in NY back in the 'sixties ...
... we used the term 'waste' to describe the nerdy kids. It meant they were a total 'waste' of space on the planet, had nothing to contribute to society, and had a head-full of muddled, useless ideas.

That certainly describes Bush to a T, doesn't it?

30. Except for the nerdy part! I may've been a nerd in HS, don't know, wasn't
really paying attention to most of the other kids. If I was I might've applied that term to the jocks.

But I know I am a nerd now!

Bush was never a nerd, don't nerds use their brains? But he's always been a Tragic Waste of space, air, food, resources, time...

31. I shouldn't have used the term 'nerd' ...
... because we think of the 'nerds' now as the kids on the Honour Roll, the ones who always do next semester's homework six months in advance.

The term was applied to the kids who were clumsy, socially-inept, cracked jokes that made no sense and that no one else found funny, had to have the teachers explain the simplest things to them over and over, and still didn't get it - now do you see why I connect Bush with the phrase?

32. I was thinking about that after I posted. I went to HS on the west coast
and I was wondering if nerds for you guys were like those creepy "straights" in the movie Animal House. Dim-witted arrogant frat boys, and now we're back to Bush!
I don't think we used the term in high school (70s for me) but like I said, I wasn't really paying attention. I think it became more of a term for computer geeks (or anybody who actually studied and "knew stuff") in the 80s, when greed became good and smart became suspect.

33. I'm talking EARLY 'sixties (unfortunately) when I was in HS.
We used to say someone was a 'waste', or refer to someone as 'wasted'.

Of course, by the end of my HS years, the term 'wasted' came to mean something totally different, as smoking dope became commonplace.

Then 'wasted' meant someone whose mind was addled, temporarily or sometimes permanently, by too much indulgence in drugs and/or alcohol --which brings us full circle ...

We're describing Bush yet again!

29. Great! As I read this, I realized that the administration is a GANG.
I wanted to add a few things to your post, and those ended up being to start a gang and to have a plan. PNAC would do that.

I now see this group as nothing more than a gang of criminals, running rampant on America. Raping America.

Fantastic idea Nance!
