A factor in the anti Vietnam war movement turning violent
was the lack of establishment politicians effectively resisting the Kennedy/Johnson/Nixon disaster. Many Democratic leaders are hesitant to speak out against what they know to be the unwinnable, immoral atrocity being perpetrated in Iraq. As they try to calculate how to protect their political viability, people are being maimed and killed every day. The damage, however, is not limited to human carnage. Their timidity serves to call into question whether America will be able to keep its democracy when its leaders knowingly avoid taking a principled stand against the fools, thugs and robbers that have hijacked our government.
I believe our best hope of ending this adventure in Iraq and returning to a sane, positive set of foriegn and domestic policies is to elect a Demcratic Congress in '06 and take back the Presidency in '08. Consequently in general elections, I will support any Democrat who promises to vote with the Democrats in organizing the House and Senate no matter how moderate they may be.
But in congressional and presidential primaries, I will only work for and contribute to candidates who make clear, unambiguous calls to get the troops out of Iraq now. Democratic leaders need to declare their opposition to a policy that everyone other than the most mesmerized Bushbots and calculating politicians can see has failed.Giving it more time will not improve the chances for victory. It will only mean more shattered lives and growing hatred for America.
Democrats need to take up George McGovern's powerful refrain from his acceptance speech:
COME HOME AMERICA
and they need to do it now.

1. Very good idea. Kerry got away with being pro-War by saying he would run
a "smarter" war for the people who own him and Hillary is having the CodePink protestors arrested just for holding banners wherever she speaks because of her support of the Iraqnam war.

We need to focus on the stand of potential Democrat Congresspersons BEFORE working for any of them.
