Helping those who cannot help themselves?
This quote from S.D. Gov. Rounds came from the Yahoo news report:

"In the history of the world, the true test of a civilization is how well people treat the most vulnerable and most helpless in their society. The sponsors and supporters of this bill believe that abortion is wrong because unborn children are the most vulnerable and most helpless persons in our society. I agree with them," Rounds said in the statement.

If that is so, why are Republicans so vehemently against social programs to protect the poor?

1. Some are...
Some aren't.

2. Because in their minds the poor can help themselves, they are
just too "lazy" to do so. Repubs cannot imagine growing up without the proverbial silver spoon, aka family money, family contacts, family influence.

3. Because they're hypocrites and protect their pocketbook
at the expense of anything else.

This quote is taken from Samuel Johnson: Providing for the poor is the true test of civilization. (Samuel Johnson) http://www.development-ethics.org/document.asp?cid=5007&sid=5003&did=1113

Plus Churchill used something along this line.

4. It is easy for us to paint all Republicans as
cut from the same evil, selfish cloth...but like most expansive generalities, it isn't true.

Some are, of course. Nasty sob's.

But many truly believe that what they call "hand-outs" actually keep the poor poor and create a nanny state. It is a world view. We joke around here and rant a lot, but we need to remember that the other side are every bit as human as we are and they are right in some things and wrong in others. Figuring out just which is which is the trick.

5. S.D. Governor Signs Abortion Ban Into Law
"It’s a sad, sorry state of affairs when a man (an elected official) does not see that a teenage girl, raped by her father is among the “most vulnerable and most helpless persons in our society.” Who is going to be there to help this helpless child? Is her life worth less than that of an unborn child? It seems it is in South Dakota."
