Lieberman won't accept endorsement from Shays

By Fred Lucas
THE NEWS-TIMES

U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman has been called the GOP's favorite Democrat. Now, after a major Republican endorsement, other GOP officials won't completely rule out voting for the three-term senator in November.

Snip...

For his part, Lieberman, facing a Democratic primary challenger from the left, said he would not accept the cross-endorsement of the Republican Party. And he's not returning the favor to Shays.

"I thank Chris Shays for his support, but of course I'll be supporting Democrat Diane Farrell in her race, as I did two years ago," Lieberman said in a statement read by campaign spokeswoman Diana Fassbender.

Farrell is the Westport first selectman who gave Shays a tough race for Congress in 2004. She's running again, and Lieberman plans to campaign for her as Democrats try to reclaim the House of Representatives.

1. That's a good sign. I guess he deserves some credit for that.

3. Wow, Shays must be worried about Farrell!
Diane Farrell strikes me as being a rising star. I love the way she articulates her case. She is wonderful and I would vote for her if I were in her district. I know some Republican women in affluent New Canaan, one of the richest towns in CT if not in the US, who worked on her last campaign. But I don't think their husbands were too happy about that!

5. I saw a post last week on DU
the numbers were something like:
64% approval among pukes.
58% among Dems
and like 56% among independents.

6. I think this should put to rest any notion Lieberman would switch...
I dislike the way Lieberman has been bootlicking Bush in public, and I think he is dead wrong in his rosy assessments of the war. And if Lamont can knock him off fine. In a state like Connecticut whoever gets the Democratic nod is likely to win in the general anyway...

But this notion that Lieberman is not a Democrat, or would ever entertain a notion of switching sides is ludicrous.
