I like Paul Hackett
I'm proud to have supported his campaign.

I think he has a great future in politics if he decides to stick it out, which I hope he does. All this bitterness can be put aside if people work on it.

For me there's simply not a doubt in my mind who is more my idea of a democrat is supposed to be. It's Brown, no contest, no offense to Hackett.

I am very persuadable about electibility. Winning is way up there on my list of priorities. I know nothing about Ohio politics, but the fact that the democratic establishment supports him makes me think they think he can win.

And the thought that they think a progressive like Brown can win a senate seat from a republican in an important state like Ohio is so unbelievably encouraging to me I can hardly stand it.

2. Maj. Hackett Is A Favorite Of Mine As Well, Ma'am
Edited on Wed Feb-15-06 01:48 AM by The Magistrate
He seems to be, to indulge in cliche, a "straight shooter", and he is certainly a fighting man. It is a shame he will not repeat his run for the Congressional seat he contested earlier; he just might have won this time around.

3. you've made a common mistake, sir
I'm a man, baby. :-)

speaking of straight-shooters, have you seen this quote?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/onpolitics/elections/bush080100.htm

But then a reporter asked if Bush's recent statements that his running mate, Richard B. Cheney, knows what the meaning of 'is' is was not, in fact, a reference to Clinton. Bush replied "Yeah, I'm talking about him then. I sure was. The context of that is somebody who is going to shoot straight with the American people and Dick Cheney is a straight shooter, a plain-spoken man."

6. I didn't know.
No slight, either, just assumed you were a she. Huh, all this time on DU, reading your astute comments and never figuring that out. I agree with your points on Hackett, too.

That's rich, commenting on Clinton's parsing of the truth. This administration has taken lying to a whole new level. I flat out believe that, whatever they say, the opposite is true.

4. Hackett might have been perceived as a one issue candidate
and the issue could be pretty risky. There remains the chance that they could a least appear to be winding down the Iraq occupation by November & steal the better part of his thunder.

8. I guess you haven't been listening to him then, casual observer.
He spoke to many issues with the same vigor and quick intellect and tongue.

I, for one, agree with Howard Dean that this "skulduggery" could very well cost the Dems dearly all over the country. We shouldn't be crapping on someone who lit a fire in so many---like Dean---who were not even Dems. Ohio needed a candidate JUST like him, as it would likely be decided by swing voters. I live in one of the most conservative areas of MO, and like Ohio, I feel the only chance we could have to unseat the Repugs would be to get a candidate like Hackett--certainly a "Progressve" like Brown would not win in MO---no matter how much more "Progressive" he might be than someone like Hackett. The same holds true in OH, I imagine. Dreaming won't make it so.

I am mad as hell, and I am a lifelong Democrat of 60 years who has continually made excuses for the party----NO MORE.

9. Dean's more recent statement
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x429607

Here's a statement the DNC just released from chairman Howard Dean. It differs somewhat markedly from what the Dr./ex-Gov. said last night, although it does appear to be an acknowledgment of the anger in some activist quarters at efforts by some Dem leaders like Rep. Rahm Emanuel to push Hackett out of the race.

Dean: "I admire Paul Hackett<.> done a lot for the country and stood up for America and our democratic values. I consider him a great friend and I sincerely hope he will remain active in Democratic politics. The Democratic Party was very lucky to have two outstanding candidates in the race for Senate in Ohio."

"Now that the possibility of a bitter primary that inadvertently benefits a republican incumbent is behind us, I want to urge everyone to come together in support of Sherrod Brown. Everyone who knows Sherrod knows that he has been a strong advocate for Ohio's working families in Congress, and will continue to stand up for them in the U.S. Senate. Ohio voters also know that they can count on Sherrod Brown to fight the Republican culture of corruption that Mike DeWine is a part of, and refocus our government on creating jobs that stay in Ohio, improving access to health care for all Americans, and promoting a strong public education system that restores opportunity and optimism."
