http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040131/pl_nm/campaign_kerry_dc&cid=615&ncid=2043NEW CASTLE, Del. (Reuters) - With attacks from rivals mounting, Democratic presidential front-runner John Kerry (news - web sites) embarked on a seven-state battle for votes in next week's contests, promising on Friday he was ready to take on Republican "attack dogs" and answer opponents.
Speaking as he began the day in South Carolina, a southern state suddenly within his reach, Kerry said he knew such attacks could be devastating to a campaign but that he could answer back because his criticism of President Bush (news - web sites) was working.
"Republicans are scared stiff about it," Kerry said of his effort to win the Democratic nomination to oppose Bush. "That's why they are sending their attacks dogs out."
"It isn't going to work," he added.
Kerry picked up the endorsement of the 700,000-member Communications Workers of America labor union and later shrugged off the heightened attention from opponents at a union rally in Delaware. "I'm a fighter," he said.
