HARRY REID: "Stopping Republican Organized Crime"
Via email...

Dear (CW),

I have been in public service for over 40 years and never been as disillusioned as I am today. In 1977, I was appointed chairman of the Nevada Gaming Commission. It was a difficult time for the gaming industry and Las Vegas, which were being overrun by organized crime.

During the next few years, there would be threats on my life, FBI stings and even a car bomb placed in my family's station wagon. What is happening today in Washington is every bit as corrupt as when Las Vegas was run by the mob, but the consequences for our country are worse. This Republican organized crime has created the most corrupt government in our history. Their "K Street Project" is a shakedown machine that would make the mafia blush. We cleaned up Las Vegas, and we will clean up Washington DC.

Today, Democrats from Howard Dean in Ohio to Nancy Pelosi and me in Washington are declaring our commitment to a government as good and honest as the people it serves. To achieve that vision, this morning we introduced the Honest Leadership and Open Government Act. Our tough, real reforms go beyond the public relations fixes Republicans suggest.

For example, a key proposal in the Act, known as "The Jack Abramoff Rule", will ban staff and members from receiving gifts, meals and travel from lobbyists. This is not just about talking the talk; we are going to walk the walk, right now. Last night I told my staff that even though this bill is not yet law our office will follow its provisions starting today. I am going to lead by example, and I challenge George Bush to do the same.

Join me, Nancy Pelosi, Howard Dean and hundreds of Democratic elected officials from around the country by signing the Honest Leadership Pledge. Our goal is to have one million Americans join us in this commitment to honest government:

Republicans will be introducing their own ethics legislation. Quite frankly having Republicans trying to clean up the mess in Washington would be like asking John Gotti to clean up organized crime.

There is a price to pay for the culture of corruption, and we can see it in almost every major issue facing our country. Big Oil, protected by Republicans reaped $100 billion in profits in 2005 while middle class families are paying more for gas, heat, and other needs. Take the state of health care. There are the HMOs that benefited from the $10 billion slush fund in the Medicare bill. On the other side are seniors who face gaps in their coverage, and skyrocketing prescription drug costs.

And then there is our national debt. On one side are the special interests and the multimillionaires who have received tremendous tax breaks over the last five years. On the other side are our children and grandchildren who will pay for these tax cuts when they inherit billions in debt.

We are seeing what happens when lawmakers and lobbyists conspire to put the needs of special interests before the needs of the American people. Democrats will put a stop to the culture of corruption--period.

Join us and sign the Honest Leadership Pledge today by visiting:

Thank you,

Harry Reid

I know similar emails are being sent today by a variety of Democratic organizations. If you are receiving multiple emails on the, same topic it is only because it is so important, we are banding together, as a party, to address this issue in one voice.

1. Good going, Harry!
My problem is-When will the leaders start leading. Seems to me, we of the clan of ethics and responsibility have been leading all along, for many years now. I am insulted that the "leaders" have finally woken up and are trying to lead-without pointing out the fact that "go along to get along" has been the guiding principle, at least until recently.
While I am pleased that they are finally getting it, I am appalled that it took soooo long and consumed so much energy and anger.

3. Let me introduce you to democracy. In a democracy...
...when the people lead, the leaders follow. Apparently we've gotten pretty damn effective at leading.

B-)

2. Well, we'll soon know if Dems are serious about cleaning up Washington.
Senator Reid, Rep Nancy Pelosi and other will announce their lobby reform plan at 2PM. It will be carried Live on C-Span.

Will Dems "Honest Leadership Act" lead to real lobbying, campaign reform?

Harry Reid is set to announce the "Honest Leadership Act" tomorrow. How far will it really go toward cleaning up Washington? Lobbyists should not be allowed to raise money for Congress members' leadership PACs--money that they do not want to have to raise themselves, but money that is needed to run those damn 30 second TV commercials!

Let's hope Harry surprises us all!

As Democrats move to unite behind an anti-corruption agenda aimed at exposing political weakness in the scandal-scarred GOP, watchdog groups are warning that a Democratic leadership lobbying-reform package will not win their automatic support.

For the most part, government watchdog organizations have become stalwart Democratic allies, decrying ethical missteps by the Republican majority and helping to expose abuses of power in the lobbying industry. But the increasingly politicized debate over how to impose a new mandate of cleaner government on members, aides and lobbyists has watchdogs concerned that the Democrats will band together behind superficial reform.

Frank Clemente, director of Public Citizen’s Congress Watch division, said he was not satisfied after viewing an early draft of the “Honesty in Leadership” proposal that House and Senate Democrats will unveil next week. “It’s an important step in the right direction, but doesn’t go nearly far enough,” Clemente said. “It lacks a ban on lobbyist campaign contributions, permits way too much special-interest-funded travel.”

<>Clemente pointed to lobbyists’ widespread custom of serving as treasurers for leadership PACs and campaign committees, allowing them to curry favor with lawmakers by organizing fundraisers and securing donations. Dreier’s leadership PAC treasurer, Anthony Roda, lobbies for Dell, Coca-Cola and Time Warner, among other companies.

12. This makes my day.
You know, how can the Republicans take this lying down? They have just been compared to John Gotti.

I think they should rush right out and start foaming, snarling, and whining about that. Get this awful insult on the news. Let the American people judge if they really are anything like Gotti. Why, Americans would never think Reid has a point, would they?

Go ahead, GOP. Fight back. Please.

That is one of the few ways DEMS can insert info the media- say things that Republicans will unwittingly repeat.

...and needs to be said on TV everyday.

"...like asking John Gotti to clean up organized crime." Great.

I dont agree with Reid on every issue, but that has never been my criteria- I just like fighting DEMS.

I think he is strongly considering a filibuster- I hope he can get one together...
