Poll question: If nominated, John Kerry Will...
With all the doubts about Kerry I see on the board (and share), I'm wondering what the general consensus is about his prospects.

3. Going for "Big Loss" right now--I hope I'm wrong...
...but I see him going down the road quite easily. Could this be yet another nail in the coffin of the Democratic Party????

7. It could be, if he loses.
But it also could be if he wins. Will he get anything meaningful done in Washington if he wins? Will he be able to pull more people into the Democratic party? Will he really stand up to the corporate interests when he's a DLCer who favors the status quo? He even said in the debate (to a chorus of groans) that he thinks you have to know how to work within the sytem to get things done.

He hasn't been known for getting things done in the time he's been there.

Like you, I hope I am wrong if he gets the nom.

5. Kerry eeks out narrow victory over McCain
Following a long series of revelations about the Bush administration's lies, malfeasance, and criminal activities, and 20% behind in all polls, Bush* announces at the convention that he will not run for President and is replaced by Senator John McCain. Despite the disarray in Republican ranks, Kerry manages a slim margin of victory.

10. Loose....sadly
This is the main reason I am not a Kerry supporter (besides the fact that he interviews put me to sleep). I think either Edwards or Clark are the only choices we have to beat dubya. Here's my thinking, we have to appeal to centrists from both parties to oust an incumbent. The GOP is going to make this an election where the only issue going to be the war on terrorism" which hits home with a lot of americans..no matter how much dubya lies.

Here's a samples from the first debate between Kerry and dubya:

Kerry: America needs to be freed from the corporate interests and lies of this administration...ect ect ect
Moderator: Mr President how do you respond to these allegations?
dubya: lies lies lies..safer than without saddam...lies lies lie..Kerry voted to cut defense...lies lies lies

The message of the economy and health care, and all the other winning issues democrats have would all be trumped by "kerry is a MA liberal" in the south. We have to at least win some red states to get a win in November.

12. What makes Edwards or Clark more moderate than Kerry?
All of the top four seem pretty much the same place on the political spectrum with Dean going a little more left on social issues.

15. Dean is not to the left of Kerry on social issues
Kerry is to the left of everyone in this race except Kucinich.

11. Kerry has a chance if....
...no new jobs under Bush
...Iraq continues to be a quagmire
...he can pull the Vietnam Vets to his side and get them to vote Dem
...he can swing the Dean momentum to his camp (damn near impossible)

if two or more of these happens, he has a good chance.

13. Here's the problem
Partisan Democrats alone won't win the election for Kerry. I agree with the conventional wisdom that Kerry is more "electable" than Howard Dean, Wesley Clark, or John Edwards. But voters who aren't partisan Democrats don't hate Dubya, so Kerry has to give them a reason to vote *for* him. If he can't pull that off, he'll be another Bob Dole: a respectable nominee who is unable to win many votes outside of partisans who hate the incumbent.

14. a couple of possible debate themes from W
Edited on Sat Jan-31-04 07:58 AM by quaker bill
"I know you feel that we were mislead about Saddam's weapons and the reasons to go to war, I am angry about that too. We are conducting a thorough investigation to assure that this never happens again" ...

"But Senator Kerry, you do agree that capturing Saddam and Osama has made the Country much safer, don't you?"

"I hear that the Senator favors keeping my tax cuts for the middle class, that is great, but I think the American people know that they can trust the Republican Party to not only do this, but to also look for new ways to cut taxes even farther, to improve the economy"

"In the light of the world we live in today Senator, you must agree that your proposals to cut 8 billion dollars from counter terrorism efforts curing the Clinton Administration was a bad idea" "How can the 'murican people trust your leadership now???"
