The Countdown to War with Iran
whether the article below is correct or not, one thing's for sure ... we are rapidly approaching a series of major Constitutional crises in the US ... the Supreme Court is about to take up a case to determine whether police can just barge into a private residence without knocking first and announcing their presence which is a 4th Amendment requirement (http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/0112-05.htm) ... just as an aside because it's so insane:

In a 1995 Supreme Court opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas stressed that the "knock and announce" rule that Hudson's case rests upon protects the dignity of residents by allowing them a reasonable time to make themselves presentable before the police enter.

and bush has thumbed his nose at the Constitution with all the NSA spying that surely goes way beyond anything that's come out in the press thus far ... all we're seeing so far is the tip of the iceberg ...

but up next will come a much more severe Constitutional crisis ... it seems increasingly likely that bush considers it the inherent right of the President to attack another country with or without Congressional authorization ... Rice made it clear during testimony before the Foreign Relations Committee that she did not see any requirement for bush to return to the Congress if he wanted to launch an attack on either Syria or Iran ...

the time for Democrats to make it clear to the American people that such imperial conduct is totally unacceptable and unConstitutional is upon us ... it's time to educate Americans about our system of checks and balances among the branches of government ... if Democrats want to have a say and lead the nation in the right direction, they cannot be RE-ACTIVE to events in Iran but rather must be PRO-ACTIVE ... if the article below is correct, there is NO EVIDENCE that Iran is developing nuclear weapons ... let's hope the next IWR doesn't go down like the last one ... if we haven't learned from the lies, the manufactured evidence, the suppression of whisteblowers and the entire conspiracy to sell the war in Iraq, we will surely be condemned to repeat it ...

There is no evidence that Iran has a nuclear weapons program. None. Not even George Bush would make that claim.

There's also no evidence that Iran has the centrifuges necessary to enrich uranium to weapons-grade material, but the reader is not likely to find that crucial fact in the 2,500 articles written on the current "crisis".

IAEA chief Mohammed Elbaradei has repeatedly stated that his team of inspectors, who’ve had the opportunity to "go anywhere and see anything", has found nothing to corroborate the assertions of the US or Israel.

On the other hand, we know that the US has developed a new regime of low-yield "usable" nuclear weapons to destroy underground bunkers. We also know that the militarists in the Pentagon have threatened to use nuclear weapons in a "first strike" preemptive attack, and that the main players in the Defense Dept. unanimously believe that nuclear weapons should be used as part of America’s strategy for global security. <skip>

If Iran does respond in force, there’s no telling how things will develop. The markets could nosedive, the dollar could fall precipitously, and vital oil shipments could be indefinitely disrupted. (Read the business page and see how jittery many analysts are) If the conflagration goes nuclear, then we can expect that China, Russia and Venezuela will take firm steps to demonstrate their disapproval. Oil shipments from Venezuela may be curtailed while China is likely to stage a sell-off of its $769 billion foreign-exchange. Either way, there will be a hefty price to pay for Washington’s recklessness.

Whatever the cost, the attack will be carried out sometime on or before March 2006 when Iran plans to open its new oil bourse. The new exchange which directly challenges the continued dominance of the greenback in the oil trade (the largest commodity trade in the world) poses an “existential threat” to the well-being of western financial institutions and elites.

Beyond the media subterfuge of “nuclear weapons” and “non-compliance”, the empire is marching resolutely to war; voluntarily risking nuclear holocaust to preserve the system of privilege and concentrated wealth.

1. We are all as screwed as screwed can be.
But then, we knew that on Nov. 4, 2004.

How long... how long?

3. "the public will not stand for it"
i'm not talking about "occupying" Iran; i'm talking about bombing Iran, possibly with nuclear bombs ...

and as for the public "not standing for it", Americans buy pet rocks and chia pets ... i wish i had your confidence in public opinion ...

that's why i think it's so important for leading Democrats to start talking about the issue ... they need to "pre-empt" the upcoming sales pitch about Iran meddling in Iraq, Iran developing nuclear technology and Iran being a hotspot for global terrorists ... the time for Democrats to speak out on this is NOW ...

4. Agree. Congress should be making a statement
And individually, dems should be doing their homework behind the scenes to evaluate evidence of Iran hostility and quality of intelligence. I don't seem them doing this.

Iran was always the big prize.

Scott Ritter has said we're going in.

It has always seemed to me that we're not interested in peace and stability in the middle east; WH actions seem to stir the pot and invite chaos and anger at every opportunity. Maybe we're looking to have it out, once and for all the oil.

5. Advice for Activists who have no Democratic representative to
badger, or otherwise contact? Many of these same areas also do not have newspapers, TV, or radio stations that will tolerate an opposition viewpoint.
