6. Ahem ...
Contrary to popular opinion, there are actually lots of very liberal people from Virginia. It's just that Republicans outnumber us strongly. So I can't understand your suggestion that my home state doesn't matter.

7. the pervasive front-runner bounce
is really pretty stunning. You saw it with Dean after the Gore endorsement: he shot up to 25% + nearly everywhere. It is even more pronounced with Kerry after actually winning IA & NH.

It makes you wonder if people even pay any attention or just wait to see who the media is promoting. Not that Kerry isn't a good candidate, he is. But from a process perspective, it's all a bit distressing.

8. Most definitely....particularly among the apoliticals.
I think the "winner" label impacts a lot on follow-up primaries. I think it may also carry over to the GE. If apoliticals who were voting for Bush because they preceived the Republicans as the "winning" party, sense that the popular sentiment is going to the Democrats, I really think a sizeable portion of this group will follow the winner.

In this election, electibility will be more important than policy positions, I believe. It's obvious that Kerry's got that quality from his surge in the polls.
