Santorum now critical of Dover case

He denies he is contradicting earlier statements of support for the cause.

Early this year, Sen. Rick Santorum commended the Dover Area School District for "attempting to teach the controversy of evolution."

But one day after a federal judge ruled that the district's policy on intelligent design was unconstitutional, Santorum said he was troubled by court testimony that showed some board members were motivated by religion in adopting the policy.

And, he said in an interview, he disagreed with the board for mandating the teaching of intelligent design, rather than just the controversy surrounding evolution.

Santorum - who sits on the advisory board of the Thomas More Law Center, which defended the school board in court - said the case offered "a bad set of facts" to test the concept that theories other than evolution should be taught in science classrooms.

"I thought the Thomas More Law Center made a huge mistake in taking this case and in pushing this case to the extent they did," Santorum said.

He said he intends to withdraw his affiliation with the Michigan-based public-interest law firm that promotes Christian values.

Folks, you heard it here first - in the next 6 months Rick Santorum is going to make a hardcore left turn to the middle so he can start painting himself out of the radical right corner where he votes and sits. Next thing you know he'll encourage us to marry our house pets or house plants or something. He did this in 2000 when he was up for re-election and he's doing it again. But this time Pennsylvania ain't buying it

BTW, from the article - Bob Casey's Jr. stance on ID:

Casey, who faces a Democratic primary challenge from Bucks County professor Chuck Pennacchio and Philadelphia lawyer Alan Sandals, says he believes that science should be taught in the science classroom, Smar said. "But if you want to talk about intelligent design, do it in religious class or church or home."

I'm suspecting the other 2 candidates are also in the same court

2. Beat it like a drum...till their ears bleed...
Don't let Pennsylvania forget Santorum's original positions.

("shocked, shocked I tell you, to learn they wanted to promote religion when they started talking about that Flying Spaghetti Monster ..." )

3. Sphinctorum is in full denial mode already........
his poll numbers are scaring the shit out of him. He knows that unless he changes just about everything in his repertoire he's going to lose the '06 election. Now he's going to jettison the sky-pilots that brought him to the dance in the first place? Ricky, you're in DEEP doo-doo!
I am thoroughly enjoying his self-destruction, it's better than anything on HBO lately. Watching Ricky Retardo twist in the wind and fall apart is one of the greatest highlights of my life. And it's only going to get better!

4. Dog-Sex Ricky did a similar thing with Iraq
trying to pretend he was always against it. THAT didn't work, either.

5. I doubt Pennsy voters are going to understand Ricky's attempt to parse out
his stance on this, much less believe it.

6. Oh, please, Prince Ricky ...
You are _IN BED_ with these fundy lunatics. Now you're trying to distance yourself from these mouth-breeding rapturists in order to get reelected.

7. He did it before and worked
Of course his opponent had absolutely no money to run a campaign against him. It won't happen this time, if it's Casey he probably has even a bigger warchest to fight him.

Welcome to DU :hi:

9. If Casey is not able to gin up some great ads from this he doesn't deserve
to be Senator. All he has to do is run the Santorum quotes with the dates and the relevant news headlines and dates. Do it all in black and white with bouncy background music. No other commentary will be needed.

10. I hear he's joining the Socialist Workers Party
And joining the Planned Parenthood board. Boy, is he DESPERATE to get elected. Them republicans only have a few core values. To wit, greed, lust for power, hate, and bigotry. If those can be considered values.
