The man goes to bed at 10:00. He says he doesn't read newspapers. His briefings are all woefully short. He spends at least an hour each day playing video games (which is something I can respect for I too play video games about an hour a day). Then he goes on vacation for like 10 weeks a year. How did it get harder? I haven't heard he changed that routine at all.
Note: I will admit, his job couldn't get much easier.

That terrorists may go through dozens of phones in just a few days--and if they had to obtain warrants for all those phones (even after the fact), well, the administrative 'nightmare' would be too big...

that they'd used a verbal code in their telephone calls to/from the U.S. before the thing took place. It's syntactic and resembles child speech in small offhand phrases. There's no way any wiretapper could have gleaned the meaning of any particular offhand phrase or even been able to determine that it contained meaningful information until after the event.

Al Qaeda operated on the assumption of American and other countries' wiretapping taking place. In 2000 and 2001.

Gee, this wiretapping stuff comes totally unexpected to them. Seems rather that the Beltway crowd has no idea that every dissident in the Middle East and all Palestinian militants assume, on the basis of experience, that some secret police fellow is listening in and taping everything they say. That's what telephone exchanges throughout the region are all about, really.
