Kerry grabs torch of Democrats' anger
MARILYN STROTHCAMP, Cindy Brown, and Carol Hopkins had all been campaign volunteers for former Democratic presidential candidate Dick Gephardt. Hopkins, 69, spent New Year's Eve and New Year's Day writing Gephardt postcards to voters. Brown had gone to the most remote portions of northern Iowa, where she met people in rural poverty who did not have a telephone and whose refrigerators were bare. "They were so angry, there was a 96-year-old woman who asked me to drive her to the polls," said Brown, 52. "My 21-year-old probably wouldn't even vote over the Internet. But that woman wanted change."

These women were also so angry at President Bush that they were willing to change on a dime for Kerry once Gephardt dropped out. Strothcamp, 58, had considered working for John Edwards because "he was young and seemed to have a head of steam." She went with John Kerry after deciding that Edwards's experience paled in comparison to Kerry's.

<snip>

"He reminds me of John Kennedy," said Helen Eufinger, a high school English teacher in her 50s. "He stands tall and straight. The way he talked about education reminded me of that Kennedy spirit."

"I will give Bush credit on his immediate response to 9/11, but now we're always on red alerts, orange alerts," said Bonnie Riverdahl, a realtor and freelance writer. "Whatever he's doing is not working." Pointing to Kerry, who shook hands around the stage for half an hour after his speech, Riverdahl said: "He's got integrity. He's got a brain."

Walter Boyle, 53, a physician, said he liked Howard Dean, but he was won over by Kerry. Boyle said Kerry "is a class act. He's got no skeletons in his closet."

8. Kerry Douses Torch of Democrat Anger
Given Kerry's record of taking both sides of an issue, it is not good news that he has grasped the torch of Democrat anger. We can now expect three or four separate "tracks" on each issue, and not know Kerry's actual leanings on any of them.

He favors the war! He opposes the war! He favors it again! How does he stand on it today? Check the daily "Position Sheet".

Like domestic tranquillity? Don't nominate Kerry.

22. Indeterminate Minority
Actually, the anti-war, anti-Kerry vote is indeterminate at this point. Yes, Kerry has his supporters but I don't believe voting for him is in the best interests of our party. Indeterminate does not mean insignificant.

Humphrey underestimated the anti-war Left in 1968, thinking as Kerry does that we were locked in. Humphrey tried to make amends when he saw he couldn't win without us, but it was too late.

Like domestic tranquillity? Don't nominate Kerry.

31. No reason for you to get offensive for supporting the DLC's guy.
Keep cheering! There are MANY who find Kerry to be an exciting, captivating, and a wonderful fearless war hero and are excited about the potential for a Kerry presidency. There are others who are bored by the prospect.

14. Kerry grabs torch of conservative anger, too
I like Kerry. As a Bush supporter in 2000 who will not support his re-election, I see a lot of posts here from people who seem to hate Kerry almost as much as Bush. Bush is EXTREMELY vulnerable. He has lost the support of his base (see--me), and with each new announcement about spending increases (see triple funding for Natl Endowment of Arts and revised prescription drug bill cost) more and more are seeing the light and looking to the democrats as a very viable alternative. Many, like myself, are doing so for the first time in our life.

I was as staunch as a conservative could be. But I cannot and will not support the re-election of Bush. But with as much negativity as there is on this web site about Kerry, if it continues he is doomed. I think after next Tuesday it will all be over but the crying for Kerry's opponents. Look, I feel sorry for you that your guy isn't probably going to win. Losing sucks. But for the good of the party, and more importantly, for the good of the republic, rally around the nominee, stop the bickering and the infighting, and you will get a load of defectors from the Bush camp to your side.

How do I know this?

Heck, 4 years ago, I thought voting democratic was akin to treason.

Now I am one.

For the good of the republic, abb in '04.

18. Thanks for the post!
I agree that Bush is very vulnerable. I know of Republicans in my town who will be staying home in 2004. It's great that you took the next step of choosing a Democratic candidate you can support!

I also don't think the virulent hatred of Kerry on this site is going to be a problem for much longer.

19. Don't worry
The only reason why you see so many anti-Kerry posts is because there are a small number of people who are very vocal, and not very reasonable. DU is not representative of Americans in general, or even the avg Democrat.

23. Do not think the negativity you see here about Kerry
means much for the GE. Even a few of these nay-sayers will vote for Kerry and the rest are not that important in the scheme of things. There is even a possibility that some are here to stir up trouble. It has been known to happen. You cannot judge their total impact by the intensity of their hatred.

25. Howdy, ex.g.o.p.er!!!!
We're really glad you're here!!

There's going to be a lot of screaming and yelling on these boards for the next couple of months, and understandably so. DUers tend to be passionate about their politics, their candidates and their country.

But we're also always ready to welcome anyone willing to lend a hand in November. Again, welcome, and tell your friends! ;-)
