More John Kerry Tells Esquire What He’s Learned
More John Kerry Tells Esquire What He’s Learned
December 18th, 2005

I can’t resist, now that I have also read the Esquire interview with John Kerry, that Ron posted about last night, sharing a little more from the interview…

Last summer I drove across the country with some friends. There was no plan and there were no trappings. We were in blue jeans and shirts, driving all night in my Ford F-150 truck, trading off behind the wheel, telling stories. Like Jack Kerouac. It was fantastic. We went through lush farm-land in Pennsylvannia and cattle country in Texas. We walked the battlefield at Little Bighorn. Wyoming. Colorade. New Mexico. We dropped into little diners at odd hours and people were freaked. “What are you doing here?”

My definition of patriotism is to defend your country with the truth, no matter the consequences.

One person I can have lunch with? My appetite is too enormous. Can I get three? Four? Abraham Lincoln. Teddy Roosevelt. Winston Churchill. How about this? Could I spend some time on the road in Galilee with Jesus? I’d like to be present at a few miracles.

We’ve got to have an honest conversation about education in this country.

Teresa is a total contradiction to the public perception. If I had to describe her in one word? Nurturing.

1. Awww, 'defend your country with the truth' - what a concept!
I miss my President! If only!
Lincoln, Roosevelt, Churchill, and Jesus - and could I be a fly on the wall? :loveya:

3. Now I know John Kerry is a dreamer....
We’ve got to have an honest conversation about education in this country.

Just so there's no confusion about my intent, we need more dreamers running things.

like good reading. I'm going to get a copy tomorrow. Thanks for the alert.

7. I'm sorry - but sh** !!!!
One word I’d like on my tombstone to describe myself for generations to come? President would be a good one.

Fine Senator Kerry -- then f****** take the bastard down - NOW! RIGHT NOW!

I listened to all of the DU posts about "Kerry has our backs" last Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr, May, Jun, Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov -- and I'm still open to it. I am *not* feeling it.

:grr:

10. I hear you, IndyOp.
Pretty disappointing.

"Democrats outside of Washington widely infer that Democrats in Washington are simply cowardly or deluded, but it is also a possibility that they are in on the shift from what Tyrell calls the “Old Order” (democracy) to the “New Order” (what shall we call that?)."

From Jane Smiley's very clear piece:

11. There is absolutely no reason to think that John Kerry is
he is at the forefront mentioning (I know more quietly than people here would like) things others avoid - he was the Senator to push the DSM / Intelligence report part 2 issue, although he could only get 9 other Senators to sign. He's referred to Wolfowitz, Perle and Feith as a cabal and has vaquely spoken of PNAC.

Both of these are dangerous issues. I trust that Kerry is explaining things at the pace he is to avoid being rejected out of hand by people who believe the US would never do these things. In addition to the obvious personal reasons, Kerry clearly needs to retain his credibility because without it he is useless as a strong Democratic voice.

14. The problem is that people have difficulties distinguishing
between those who fight to make things happen and those who like going in the limelight and make the tough talks for the media.

Kerry is definitively in the first category. He sometimes stay too silent in the media and people do not realize he is very much involved in these issues.

12. I wish he were, but, I also wish he couldn't have run in 2004 because Gore
was already president.
